HEATHER KOMUS was born in
Winnipeg, Manitoba, and earned her
Bachelor of Fine Art from the University
of Manitoba. Heather is a mixed-media
artist working with various materials
such as embroidery, handmade paper,
hair, and pig intestine. Her work stems
from an interest in biology, particularly
entomology. She has exhibited in
Winnipeg in solo and group shows.

RESIDENCY PROJECT
During her residency, Heather will
investigate the ecosystems of Riding
Mountain Park. She will create a
series of unique embroideries on pig
intestine that will explore the role of
parasitism and the microscopic in an
ecosystem. With a deep interest in
biology, Heather’s work focuses on the
microscopic to magnify those moments
that make us, as humans, feel small.
After all, there are more creatures in
the soil of your average football field
than there are humans on the planet.

HEATHER KOMUS est née à Winnipeg.
Elle a obtenu un baccalauréat en
beaux-arts de l’Université du Manitoba.
Artiste spécialiste des techniques
mixtes, elle travaille avec des matériaux
variés : broderie, papier fait à la main,
cheveux, intestins de porc. Son travail
est issu d’un intérêt pour la biologie, et
en particulier pour l’entomologie. Elle a
présenté ses œuvres à Winnipeg dans
le cadre d’expositions individuelles et
collectives.

Pendant son stage, Heather explorera
les écosystèmes du parc du MontRiding. Elle créera une série d’œuvres
de broderie sur un support d’intestin
de porc qui examinent le rôle du
parasitisme et du microscopique dans
un écosystème. Marqué par la biologie,
le travail de l’artiste se concentre sur
les éléments microscopiques afin
de magnifier les moments qui nous
rappellent, à nous les humains, que
nous sommes petits. Après tout, il y
a plus de créatures dans le sol d’un
terrain de football moyen qu’il y a
d’êtres humains sur la planète.
