L’artiste
En 1475, Albrecht Bouts (1451/55-1549), fils
du célèbre Primitif flamand Dirk Bouts (ca.
1415-1475), reprend l’atelier de son père à
Louvain, qui jouit d’une réputation à l’échelle
européenne. Il le dirigera jusqu’à sa mort en
1549. Albrecht se spécialise dans la création
de portraits du Christ, de la Vierge et de saint
Jean-Baptiste destinés à la dévotion privée.
Ce mouvement dit devotio moderna conduit
les fidèles à prier chez eux devant une image
de piété pour stimuler leur empathie. Afin
de répondre à la demande grandissante
pour ce type d’œuvres, Albrecht Bouts
et son atelier – une véritable entreprise –
s’organisent pour produire ces peintures
en grande quantité. Certaines s’inspirent
de modèles renommés de Dirk Bouts tandis
qu’Albrecht crée de nouvelles compositions
originales à succès.

Der Künstler
The artist
Im Jahre 1475 übernahm Albrecht Bouts
(1451/55-1549), Sohn des berühmten altniederländischen Malers Dirk Bouts (ca. 14151475), das Atelier seines Vaters in Löwen, das
einen europaweiten Ruf genoss. Er leitete es
bis zu seinem Tod im Jahre 1459. Albrecht
spezialisierte sich darauf, Bildnisse von Christus,
Maria und Johannes dem Täufer zu gestalten,
die zur privaten Andacht dienten. Im Zuge
einer Devotio moderna genannten Bewegung
beteten die Gläubigen bei sich zuhause vor
einem Bild, das ihr Mitempfinden wecken
sollte. Um der steigenden Nachfrage nach
solchen Gemälden zu entsprechen, richteten
sich Albrecht Bouts und sein Atelier – ein
regelrechtes Unternehmen – darauf ein, sie
in großer Menge herzustellen. Waren manche
davon an bekannte Modelle von Dirk Bouts
angelehnt, so schuf Albrecht auch erfolgreiche
neue Originalkompositionen.
Albrecht Bouts (1451/55-1549) is the son of
Dirk Bouts (ca. 1415-1475), a renowned Early
Netherlandish painter with a pan-European
reputation. He takes over his father’s
workshop in 1475 and runs it until his death
in 1549. Albrecht specializes in portraits of
Christ, the Holy Virgin and Saint John the
Baptist for contemplation. This movement,
known as Devotio Moderna, encourages the
faithful to pray in private in front of devotional
images to stimulate empathy. In order to
satisfy a growing demand for such images,
Albrecht Bouts’ workshop expands into a
large enterprise, producing paintings in great
number. While some are based on famous
prototypes by Dirk Bouts, Albrecht creates a
number of successful new compositions.

et les Images de la Passion
Grâce à des prêts prestigieux en provenance
entre autres de la National Gallery de Londres,
du Prado et du Louvre, l’exposition Sang
& Larmes. Albrecht Bouts et les Images de la
Passion à l’affiche du MNHA du 7 octobre
2016 au 12 février 2017 réunit des œuvres
exceptionnelles de la fin du XVe et du début
du XVIe siècle. Cette exposition repose sur
un partenariat avec l’IRPA (Institut royal du
Patrimoine artistique) de Bruxelles et une
collaboration avec le Suermondt-LudwigMuseum d’Aix-la-Chapelle, qui l’accueillera du
8 mars au 11 juin 2017.
Les plus prestigieuses peintures de dévotion
autographes de Dirk et d’Albrecht Bouts, mais
aussi de leur atelier, sont présentées de manière
inédite en résonance avec d’autres créations
des grands maitres contemporains actifs dans
les principaux centres de production des
Pays-Bas méridionaux, tels Hans Memling,
Colyn de Coter ou Simon Marmion. Un riche
éventail de sculptures reprenant les différents
thèmes iconographiques illustrés en peinture
enrichit cette sélection. Enfin, des peintures
exceptionnelles d’Albrecht Bouts comme
l’Autoportrait (Musée Brukenthal, Sibiu)
récemment découvert et la Vierge vénérée par
saint Joseph, exposée pour la première fois au
public, complètent cette splendide affiche.
L’important diptyque de dévotion d’Albrecht
Bouts du MNHA, représentant le Christ couronné
d’épines et la Mater Dolorosa, occupe une place
centrale dans l’accrochage du MNHA.

und das Antlitz der Passion
Dank großartiger Leihgaben unter anderem
aus der Londoner National Gallery, dem Prado
und dem Louvre führt die Ausstellung Blood
& Tears. Albrecht Bouts and the Image of the
Passion (Blut & Tränen. Albrecht Bouts und das
Antlitz der Passion) einzigartige Werke aus
dem ausgehenden 15. und beginnenden
16. Jahrhundert erstmals an einem Ort
zusammen. Diese vom MNHA konzipierte
Ausstellung, welche vom 7. Oktober 2016
bis 12. Februar 2017 zu sehen ist, beruht
auf eine Partnerschaft mit dem Brüsseler
IRPA (Institut royal du Patrimoine artistique)
und auf einer Zusammenarbeit mit dem
Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum in Aachen, das
diese ebenfalls vom 8. März bis 11. Juni 2017
zeigen wird.
Erstmals werden die hervorragendsten
Andachtsgemälde von Dirk und Albrecht
Bouts – eigenhändige, aber auch Arbeiten
ihres Ateliers – in Anklang mit anderen
Schöpfungen großer Meister wie Hans
Memling, Colyn de Coter oder Simon Marmion
präsentiert, die zur damaligen Zeit in den
wichtigsten Produktionszentren der südlichen Niederlande tätig waren. Ein reiches
Spektrum an Skulpturen, welche die in der
Malerei veranschaulichten ikonografischen
Themen widerspiegeln, ergänzt diese
Auswahl. Außerordentliche Bildwerke von
Albrecht Bouts wie das vor kurzem entdeckte
Selbstbildnis (Brukenthal Museum, Sibiu)
und das erstmalig öffentlich ausgestellte
Gemälde Josef in Anbetung der Jungfrau Maria
vervollständigen das glanzvolle Aufgebot.
Albrecht Bouts’ bedeutendes Andachtsdiptychon Christus mit Dornenkrone und
Mater Dolorosa aus dem MNHA nimmt in der
Ausstellung einen zentralen Platz ein.

and the Image of the Passion
With prestigious loans from the National
Gallery London, the Prado Museum and the
Louvre among others, the exhibition Blood &
Tears. Albrecht Bouts and the Image of the Passion
brings together for the first time exceptional
works from the late 15th and early 16th
centuries. Organized in collaboration with the
Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage in Brussels
(IRPA), the exhibition first opens at the National
Museum of History and Art Luxembourg (7th
October 2016 - 12th February 2017) before
being presented at the Surmondt-LudwigMuseum in Aachen (8th March - 11th June 2017).

For the first time, the most prestigious
devotional paintings by Dirk and Albrecht
Bouts and their workshop are presented
together with works by great contemporary
Southern Netherlandish masters such as
Hans Memling, Colyn de Coter and Simon
Marmion. A wide range of sculptures that
echo the iconography of the paintings, a
recently discovered Self Portrait by Albrecht
Bouts (Brukenthal Museum, Sibiu), as well as
Saint Joseph Venerating the Holy Virgin that
has never been on public display, enrich the
visitor’s experience.
The MNHA’s important devotional diptych
of a Christ Crowned with Thorns and a Mater
Dolorosa holds a prominent position among
the works of the exhibition.
