A Return to Saintliness: The Restoration of
Orphaned, poor, and serving as an understudy to a druggist, Piero
Buonaccorsi (1501—1547) or, as he came to be known, Perino del
Vaga, first rose to prominence under the tutelage of his extended
family. With his talent for painting, however, he transcended his
birthright to become not only one of Raphael’s most important
pupils, but also one of the central artists of Italian Mannerism.
Included in the exhibition From Raphael to Carracci: The
Art of Papal Rome is one of Perino’s early works, St. Julian
Hospitaller (c. 1520—25). According to Italian Renaissance expert
and NGC deputy director and chief curator David Franklin, the
work is a “little known, enigmatic masterpiece that … is central
to the show’s exploration of Raphael’s style and its legacy in
Rome during this important period in the history of art.” Hailing
from one of the most prestigious princely collections in Europe
— that of the Colonna family in Rome — this rare work has never
before travelled to North America.
Before its showing in Ottawa, St. Julian hung in some disrepair
in Rome, afflicted by the vagaries of time, its frame shifting, its
surface muddied and dirty. The work was so fragile, in fact, that
it required major restoration to make the trip safely from Rome.
Fortunately, its plight inspired intervention.
Upon hearing of the importance of St. Julian for the exhibition,
Alenia North America, an Italian-based company established in
Canada and the United States, decided to underwrite a full

Pauvre, orphelin et placé comme apprenti chez un apothicaire,
Piero Buonaccorsi (1501—1547), dit Perino del Vaga, acquit un
début de notoriété grâce à la protection de sa famille élargie.
Toutefois, son talent lui permit de transcender ses origines et il
devint non seulement l’un des élèves les plus éminents de
Raphaël, mais aussi l’un des peintres de tout premier plan du
maniérisme italien.
De Raphaël à Carracci. L’art de la Rome pontificale met en
vedette entre autres l’une des premières œuvres de Perino del
Vaga, Saint Julien l’Hospitalier (v. 1520—1525). D’après le spécialiste de la Renaissance italienne, sous-directeur et conservateur
en chef du MBAC, David Franklin, le tableau est « un chef-d’œuvre
énigmatique, peu connu, qui […] est essentiel à la lecture que
propose notre exposition du style et du legs raphaélien à Rome
pendant cette période artistique névralgique ». Appartenant à
l’une des collections princières les plus prestigieuses d’Europe —
celle de la famille Colonna, à Rome —, cette œuvre exceptionnelle
n’avait jusque-là jamais traversé l’Atlantique.

Avant d’être exposé à Ottawa, Saint Julien était demeuré dans
un état de dégradation plus ou moins avancé à Rome. La peinture
était marquée par les caprices du temps, le cadre était instable
et la surface de la toile, sale et poussiéreuse. En fait, l’œuvre était
si fragile qu’il était impensable de l’expédier sans procéder
d’abord à un travail majeur de restauration.

Giuseppe Giordo says: “we are honored to
sponsor the restoration of this exemplary
piece of Italian Mannerism. It is our privilege
to bring this piece of our heritage to Canada.”
Under the supervision of the Colonna family, the entire surface of the panel and frame
were expertly disassembled, aligned, buttressed, reconstructed, chemically-treated,
hand-cleaned and varnished. St. Julian has
been returned to its initial tonalities and integrity — a vision absent for centuries — and
will remain a symbol of the possibilities of
artistic altruism. Upon its return to Rome,
St. Julian will become one of the most remarkable stories in the Galleria Colonna. And it’s
“thanks to Alenia’s generosity,” Franklin says,
that “it will be possible to reassess this compelling work.”
Heureusement, son état critique inspira
une intervention décisive. Ayant entendu
parler de l’importance de Saint Julien pour
l’exposition qui se préparait à Ottawa, Alenia
North America, une société italienne établie
au Canada et aux États-Unis, décida de financer la restauration complète du tableau pour
que celui-ci puisse voyager. « C’est un honneur pour nous d’appuyer la restauration de
cet exemple remarquable de maniérisme
italien et un privilège de pouvoir apporter ce
témoignage de notre patrimoine au Canada »,
a affirmé Giuseppe Giordo, P.-D.G. d’Alenia.
Sous la supervision de la famille Colonna,
la surface du panneau et le cadre ont donc été
adroitement démontés, alignés, renforcés,
reconstruits, traités à l’aide de produits chimiques, nettoyés à la main et vernis. Saint Julien,
qui a retrouvé son intégrité et ses tonalités
d’origine — un cachet disparu depuis des siècles —, restera le symbole des possibilités de
l’altruisme artistique. À son retour à Rome,
Saint Julien incarnera l’une des plus belles histoires de la Galleria Colonna et comme le souligne Franklin, « grâce à la générosité d’Alenia,
il est maintenant possible de réévaluer cette
œuvre fascinante ».
