March/April 2014 Message from the Principal It looks like Winter is finally leaving and Spring is right around the corner. The snow has disappeared and the warmer weather has been heartily welcomed. With this nicer weather and the accompanying rain showers comes challenges with our field area. As always, we will continue to allow students to play on the field only when conditions are appropriate and it is not too muddy. Our staff continues to dedicate themselves to student learning and achievement inside and outside the classroom, and engage in a variety of professional learning opportunities, which are shared with our students. continued . . . Terry Fox P.S. Newsletter 185 Wintermute Blvd., Scarborough, ON M1W 3M9 http://schools.tdsb.on.ca/terryfox . . . continued We also have a very involved and supportive parent council whose support has allowed us to bring such things as Scientists in the School and Prologue Performances to our school. We are able to bring in a variety of musicians/ performers who come to our school for special assemblies and occasions. All of this is possible due to hardworking and committed staff, parents, students and community members. With the arrival of the final term we would like to thank the many parents who respect the traffic regulations in the front of the school. Nevertheless, this area still remains an area of safety concern. The school and the Parent Council have addressed this concern by initiating the Safety Program (Kiss n’ Ride, Safety Patrollers). D. Malvern, Principal Sports Highlights! OT Fitness Fun in Athletics Ontario Finals On April 3rd, thirty of Terry Fox's finest grade 7 and 8 athletes competed in the annual OT Fitness Fun in Athletics Ontario Finals. As the two-time reigning champions we were eager to defend our title and bring the trophy back to Fox. However, schools from all over the province such as Hamilton, Brampton, Alliston, and Toronto were also determined to come out on top. Our athletes ran their fastest, jumped their farthest, and threw their best but unfortunately we did not retain the title. We finished in a close second place. Everyone had so much fun and now we look forward to next year's competition. The Fun in Athletics team are: Selina Lam, Johanna Hua, Anushka Gogi, Crystal Chu, Fiona Wang, Maggie Luo, Kara Sheng, Melissa Wong, Victoria Young, Rachel Chu, Olivia Yip, Jenny Li, Jennifer Chen, Jacky Jiang, Kelly Su, Jing Lin, Ronald Zhou, Stephen Yu, Haoran Wang, Jonathan Xie, Brooks Lin, Alex Zhou, Kevin Luo, Michael Chu, Thomas Zhu, Leslie Huang, Anthony Tsang, Daniel Zhou, David Li, and Frankie Mai. Calendar of Events Career Day On Thursday, April 3rd, there was an event called Career Day that happened at Sir Earnest MacMillan Senior Public School. The Grade 7 and 8 students and teachers were invited to join. Everyone went to school early in the morning, and then we headed to MacMillan by foot. Outside, the air was fresh; it gave us a comfortable feeling. When we got there, a pilot was in the gym waiting for us. He made a speech about how to become a pilot and what pilots do. Next, all the students were separated into groups. We were able to meet three presenters with different careers. First, I went to the Real Estate presentation. The broker, Mrs. Felice, taught us how to communicate with buyers and sellers. There was a break and then afterwards I went to the nurses’ room. There were 2 nurses, one was more experienced than the other. The nurses showed us the different items that are often used in nursing and how to use them. After lunch, I met the lawyer, Mrs. Farmer. I learned that arguing and communication are very important skills for a lawyer. The Career Day event ended at 2:30 in the afternoon. We went back to our school. Sadly, I didn't get to meet the presenter for art and music. However, I'll try next year!!!! :) Please mark your calendars for two very exciting upcoming events: ECO FAMILY NIGHT Thursday, April 24, 2014 6:00 – 7:30 pm SPRING CONCERT Thursday, May 15, 2014 6:00 – 7:00 pm -Lucy T. Thump Thump! That is the sound of a horse galloping by the horizon. Have you ever heard of the Loyalists? Loyalists lived a long time ago and were the first group of settlers to come to Canada. On March 4, a Loyalist lady came to our classroom. She taught us a lot of things including how they lived, the war, and other things too. My favourite part was when I played with different kinds of games. I wish that I can see her all the time!!! BEST DAY EVER!!! By: Vivian Grade 3 – Room 203 Our Trip to Forest Valley – April 14, 2014 On April 14th, we went to Forest Valley. At first, we visited a portable called the “Den”. We studied maps and we played a mapping game. We looked at the map for locations, then found it and drew the symbol. You actually have to go to the location! We played the game inside one time, and outside one time. The outside map was a lot bigger! Then, we had lunch. My lunch was; pizza, juice and Yop. After lunch, we went back to the “Den”. We learned about co-operation, played a cooperation game and then we visited the Don River. It was “supertastic” if I do say. Then we went to a shelter and played a noodle game. You have to put your right pointing finger and our guider says “Finger!” and we let go and try to get your partners noodle. After, we went to a place for lemonade. Then we went back to the school. The end. Philip L.– grade 2 On Monday, April 14th, it was my trip to Forest Valley! It was so awesome! We played games and learned about interesting things. First, I went to school and did the same old regular routine. Then we went on the bus. After the bus ride we met our tour guide. The weather was warm and sunny. When we went to the Den, which was a portable, we did mapping games. We also did scavenger hunts with the maps, both outside and inside. Then it was lunch time and I had rice, shrimp, eggs, green onions, and cabbage. Also, Mrs.Van Der Toorn made us rice crispy squares, and Sabrina made cupcakes. Then we played at the park. My favourite thing was walking on a wobbly, metal log. After we went back to the Den and talked about co-operation and played a cooperation game. Then, it was time to go, but before that we drank lemonade. It was so sweet and yummy! The trip to Forest Valley was awesome! Nico J. Terry Fox Clothes Drive Do you have clothing that no longer fit or no longer use? We have the perfect solution for you! Terry Fox Public School’s EcoSchools team will be partnering up with the Canadian Diabetes Association to hold a Used Clothing Drive in April. We will be collecting gently used clothing and donating it to the Canadian Diabetes Association. For every garbage bag full of clothing that we collect, our school will receive $2. The money raised will go towards building a garden for our school. The Canadian Diabetes Association will sell the used clothing through Valu Village and 100% of the proceeds will go towards the Canadian Diabetes Association and directly support diabetes research, education and advocacy. What items are accepted? All men’s, women’s, adult, or children’s used clothing is acceptable. Examples of items are shirts, pants, jackets, vests, sweaters, dresses, jeans, scarves etc…. When do we bring the used clothing to school? Terry Fox Public School will be holding a Family Eco-Literacy Night on Thursday, April 24th. On that evening, we will be displaying all the bags of clothing we have collected. Due to limited storage space at our school, we will begin accepting bags of clothing during the week of April 22nd. Further information will be provided closer to the date on where to place the bags at school. Alternatively, you may also drop of your bags of clothing during Family Eco-Literacy Night. Do I have to bring a whole garbage bag full of clothes? No. Students and parents can bring as little or much used clothing as they would like. As the clothing is collected, the school will transfer the items into garbage bags as necessary. EcoSchools looks forward to being able to help the environment by diverting used clothing from landfills. We are also proud to be able to help our community and support the Canadian Diabetes Association and the battle against diabetes. Thanks for your support! Dr. Norman Bethune Grade 5s Invade Toronto Island Nature School On Wednesday March 2, our Grade 5 students landed on the docks of the Toronto Island, for a three day adventure in education and fun. For many students, this was the first time they had been away from their families overnight but our students seemed a lot less worried about that than their parents! It didn’t take long for the students to acclimatize to their new environment. They quickly found their bunks, unpacked, and headed out for the first learning session. Grade 5s participated in numerous sessions, including creating Art on the beach, learning about the production of maple syrup, and assessing the conservation of energy in the living community of Toronto Island. Students were given the opportunity to feed some forest birds by hand, and they got to experience what it feels like to be in a Woodland Food-Chain by participating in Predator and Prey. There was perhaps, a little less sleep than usual, but all in all, the students were remarkably well behaved, as noted by the Island School instructors on numerous occasions. Luckily, the weather held out for us, considering the time year and kind of winter we’ve just had. Thank you to Ms. Caruana for managing the girls’ dorm with twice as many students as Mr. N. and Mr. B. had to oversee! The Island School is the best school ever!! April 2th, there was a show in the gym, so we came down and saw the show. When the Brazilian dancers came in, they wore only pants and were half naked! Their pants were tight, green and yellow. There was also a woman, and she wore yellow and blue clothes. The dance was awesome! There were loud sounds everywhere, and they did about 4 dances for the whole school (well I think so). One was the king and there was also a dance about a soccer player because Brazil people are so good at soccer. And also, they did a slave dance. The slaves made their job easier by dancing while they were working for someone. They told us the sound of a special instrument and it sounds like a country sound. They also showed us how you make it and how to play it. And on a dance, they shot fake bows, but they didn’t really hurt or shoot anyone. After, they asked if we had any questions. Then it was almost recess so we went to class and get ready for…..RECESS! By: Vivian, Tim and Steven April 2nd Today is Arche Brazil! First, those creepy people came out and freaked me out! They did not wear shirts. They wore spiked clothes. It was pretty cool! (and freaky) Second, they began playing music. They have similar instruments to Africa! Cool so far! Right?! Then they called up some kids to dance!! AWESOME!!! It was kind of weird (p.s. creepy moves). After that they showed us fighting! There were jumps and kicks. Isn’t that cool!? Awesome! Then, they called more people to dance! It was amazing. Yeah! Then it was over and we all returned to our classrooms.
