SHORT BIO
Specialist in planning, management and evaluation of international projects of architecture. Gonzalo
Lizarralde is a Professor at the School of Architecture of Université de Montréal. He has long
experience in consulting for architecture and construction projects and has published important research
in the fields of low-cost housing and project management. Dr. Lizarralde has taught at the University of
Cape Town (South Africa); McGill University, Université de Montréal, and Universidad Javeriana
(Colombia) and has given lectures in universities in Europe, USA and Latin America. He has a post
doctorate from the Department of Construction Economics and Management of the University of Cape
Town. Dr. Lizarralde is the director of the IF Research Group (grif) of Université de Montréal, which
studies the processes related to the planning and development of construction projects. He is a founding
member of i-Rec an international network for improving post-disaster reconstruction. He is the co-author
of the book “Rebuilding After Disasters: From Emergency to Sustainability”.

This doctorate work explores various processes of the post-disaster housing reconstruction projects in
developing countries. By doing this, the research recognizes that strategic planning (that goes beyond the
project-specific decisions) coupled with organizational integration and differentiation are fundamental aspects
to attain the objectives of sustainable housing reconstruction. The research findings challenge the traditional
approaches to post-disaster reconstruction by demonstrating that the success of the projects does not
depend of community participation (as it has been widely accepted since the 1980s).
