In practice, improving weather services can take innumerable forms and have extensive impacts on lives and livelihoods in daily life, as well as via occasional major events (disasters). To illustrate the potential nature and magnitude of values of investing in improved meteorological services, consideration will be given to the Severe Weather Forecasting and Disaster Risk Reduction Demonstration Project for the South Pacific region (SWFDDP) and its potential benefit in reducing the cost of disaster events Holland, Paula. Hydrometeorological disasters in the Pacific Based on available Pacific Damage and Loss (PDaLo) records, Pacific Island countries and territories (PICTs) reported 1105 events caused by ‘natural’ hazards since records began.2 Around 615 of these occurred over the 30‐year period, extending from 1983‐ 2012. Of those events, the majority were hydrometeorological in nature covering 20 PICTs. Assuming that landslides are predominantly caused by hydrometeorological events, Pacific hydrometeorological disasters accounted for around 75 per cent of all disaster events reported (69 per cent if attributed to seismic events).
