Le thé de l’après-midi
Afternoon Tea
Prendre le thé de l’après-midi débuta
en Angleterre à l’époque Victorienne au
tournant du XIXème siècle.
The taking of afternoon tea began in Victorian times around the turn of the XIXth
century.
On prétend que cette habitude fut inventée par la Duchesse Anne de Bedford,
pour calmer une petite faim entre le déjeuner et le dîner.
Allegedly it was invented by Ann Duchess
of Bedford to relieve the hunger she encountered between lunch and dinner.
Un jour, se plaignant d’une baisse subite
de tension, elle demanda à ses servantes
de lui apporter son thé accompagné de
pâtisseries. Cette collation étant si délicieuse à son goût qu’elle devint une habitude quotidienne de l’après-midi auxquelles elle prenait beaucoup de plaisir.
Prendre le thé l’après-midi fut vite adoptée par la haute société à l’époque Victorienne et c’est seulement après quelques
décennies que cette pratique devint si
populaire que des Tea-rooms commencèrent à s’ouvrir au publique.
One day she complained of experiencing a “sinking feeling” and instructed her
servants to bring her tea and cakes. She
found it so delightful that it became a regular occurrence in her daily routine and
she enjoyed it everyafternoon thereafter.
The taking of afternoon tea quickly became an established practice among the
Victorian upper classes, but after only a
few decades it became so popular that
tea rooms began to open for the general
public.
