C’est avec grand plaisir que nous annonçons le concours 2016 des Amis de la Culture Française, une
associationquiaccueilletousceuxquiontlegoûtdelalanguefrançaiseetquiencouragel’étudedecelle-ciparles
étudiantsdesécolessecondairesdenotrerégion.
Comme l’année passée, le concours est ouvert seulement aux étudiants de quatrième ou cinquième
année et est limité à 10 étudiants par école. Attachés, vous trouverez les formulaires à remplir et tous les

OurlesAmisstudentcontestissetforMONDAYMARCH7,2016.Wewillcontinuewiththesame
formataslastyear.
1. ThecontestisbeingheldearlierinMarchtoavoidconflictswithtesting,vacations&other
schoolactivities.Thedeadlineforapplicationsis:TuesdayMarch1st.Ifyoucanletme
knowaheadoftimehowmanystudentsarecomingandonwhatlevel,itmakesmyplanning
somucheasier.Merci!Also,in2015,wehadtocanceltheFrancophonelevelbecausewe
didn’thaveenoughstudents.Thecriticalmassis10students.Asitturnsout,therewere
applicationsthatcameinlatesotherewouldhavebeenenoughstudentstohavethatlevel
afterall.Sopleasetrytoadheretothedeadlines.
2. Weareholdingthecontestlaterintheday–from4-6:00PMsothatyouwon’tberequired
toleaveschoolearlyonthedayofthecontest.Asalways,wewillsticktoourtimelimits.
3. Wehaveshortenedthenumberofquestionsandthetypesofquestionsthatwegiveto
thestudentstoprepareaheadoftime.Wehopeitwillbeeasierforthestudentstoprepare
andforyoutocoachthem.Questionsofapersonalnaturemakeiteasierforthestudentsto
expressthemselvesratherthanquestionsthattheyhavetoresearchandmemorize.
4. Therewillbenotopicforround2.Thejudgeswillasktwopersonalquestionsthatare
withintherangeofwhatstudentscanexpressinFrench.Likelastyear,wewillholdround
2intwosessionswithfewerstudents.Thismakesiteasierforourjudgestogettoknowthe
studentsbetterandtopickthewinners.
5. SinceweaddedtheFrancophonelevelsomeyearsago,wehavehadtodeclareonestudent
ineligibleeachyear.Itmakesitdifficultnotonlyforthestudentbutalsoforthejudges.
Ratherthantrytomakerulesforthislevel,letmeremindyouwhywecreatedthislevel.It
wascreatedforstudentswholivehereandspeakFrenchathomewiththeir
parent(s)orhaveattendedaFrenchbilingualschoolorhavestudiedFrenchformany
years.PleasedonotsendusstudentswhohavelivedandgonetoschoolinFranceor
anotherfrancophonecountry.Ifyouareunsure,thencontactmeandwe’llworkit
out.Thatway,noonewillbedisappointedthedayofthecontest.Westillneeda
totalminimumof10onthislevel.
6. OccasionallythereareoutstandingstudentsinFrench3thatcancompetewithstudentsin
themoreadvancedclasses.We’vehadafewinthepast.Letmeknowifyouaregoingto
includethemandtheymustbewithinthe10studentlimitfromeachschool.

Les Amis de la Culture Française welcome all those who enjoy the
Frenchlanguage.Thegroupbringstogetherpeopleoflivelymindand
encourages the exploration and discussion of French thought,
literature, music and culture. We also promote the learning of the
Frenchlanguageinlocalhighschools.
WHO:StudentswhoaretakingadvancedFrenchclasses(French4&5).Pleasenotethat
previousprizewinnersarenoteligible.
Level 3: Francophone or Very Fluent: Students who have attended a bilingual school,
haveFrenchspeakingparentsorhavestudiedFrenchformanyyears.Studentswhohave
livedandstudiedinFrance(orinotherfrancophonecountries)arenoteligible.Therewill
benoquestionstoprepareaheadoftime.Thejudgeswillaskpersonalquestionsthatare
withinthecapabilitiesofthestudents.

WHEN: March 7, 2016 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 2727
College Ave., Berkeley, CA. Applications are due on or before Tuesday, March 1.

WHAT:ThecontestisoralandthestudentswillbejudgedontheirspokenFrench.The
students will be asked to give a short introduction in French about themselves and they
will also be asked to respond to some of the questions provided. We have 3 levels of
competition.Thetopstudentsfromround1willgoontothefinalroundtodeterminethe
winners on each level. We will conduct round 2 in small groups instead of one larger
group.
PRIZES:Cashprizeswillbeawardedtothetopstudents.Theprizeswillbepresentedatan
awardsceremonyonThursday,April14.SomeonefromtheFrenchConsulatewillbethere
toawardtheprizes.
