LES POSSESSIFS
Pour évoquer la possession en anglais nous avons plusieurs possibilités :
Les adjectifs possessifs : my - your - his
/ her / its
- our - your - their
En anglais les adjectifs possessifs s'accordent avec la personne qui possède
(pas de féminin/masculin pour les objets )
Si c'est une fille qui possède : her pencil.
Si c'est un garçon qui possède: his pencil.
Si plusieurs personnes possèdent: their pencil.

Mine: le mien / ma mienne / les miens / les miennes / à moi

I have two balls. They are my balls. They are mine
Yours: le tien / la tienne / les tiens / les tiennes / à toi
le vôtre / la vôtre / les vôtres / à vous
I have a blue bike. Sarah has a red bike; the blue bike is mine. Sarah, the red one is yours
I have a big ball; you have two little balls; the big ball is mine, the two little balls are yours
His: le sien / la sienne / les siens / les siennes / à lui ( le possesseur est masculin singulier)
Bob has two books. They are his books; they are his.
Hers: le sien / la sienne / les siens / les siennes / à elle (le possesseur est féminin singulier)
Pat has a cat. It is her cat ; It is hers.
Ours: le nôtre / la nôtre / les nôtres / à nous
Sarah and I have a seesaw. It is our seesaw; it is ours.
We have two dogs. They are our dogs ; They are ours
Theirs : le leur / la leur / les leurs / à eux
My grandparents have a nice house. It is their house ; this house is theirs

Le cas possessif avec ‘s qui est utilisé pour des personnes ou des animaux et choses avec lesquels il y
a un lien affectif. Il se construit ainsi :
- Avec un nom singulier : nom de celui qui possède + ’s + nom de ce qui est possédé
William’s birthday
- Avec un nom pluriel : nom de ceux qui possèdent + ’ + nom de ce qui est possédé
My parents’ anniversary
- Avec un nom singulier terminé par un « s » : nom de celui qui possède + ’ + nom de ce qui est
possédé
Charles’ birthday
Le cas possessif avec « of » s’utilise généralement lorsque ce qui possède et ce qui fait l’objet de la
possession sont des choses mais aussi dans les structures suivantes :
- Of + nom + ‘s
She’s a friend of Peter’s = she’s one of Peter’s friends
- Of + pronom possessif
She’s a friend of his = she’s one of his friends
Did you borrow a book of mine ? = did you borrow one of my books ?
Dans certains cas on omet l’objet possédé :
- pour éviter une répétition
This isn't your coat, this is Tom 's (sous-entendu 'coat') Ce n'est pas ton manteau c'est 'celui' de

- on omet souvent des mots comme : shop house church cathedral

chez le fleuriste)
