4. Synergistic Activities
I have developed an original theorical and methodological approach to ‘cognitive technologies’
in my doctoral thesis through the analysis of the uses of communication technologies (e-mail)
among faculty members from different disciplines. As cognitive technologies, computer tools are
understood as tools for thinking which participate to the general production of meaning. The
results of my study show how this new communicaton tool is incorporated differently depending
on work practices and reveal signs of scientific practices-in-evolution which affect the conditions
of scientific knowledge production.
During my two year appointment as an ergonomy specialist in the Montreal Research Center for
Computer Science, I have developed an expertise in the design and development of software
solutions, mostly Internet-based applications. I have also gained very relevant professionnal skills
in fostering successful information exchanges which allow good understanding of non-expert
communities (users) by computer experts (computer scientist).
Over a period of 6 years I acted as a Research Associate at the University of Montreal. I took part
in four research projects – dealing with the social aspects of Information and Communication
Technologies which provided me with a large set of skills including data collecting tool design,
data analysis, article writing and lecturing as well as project management and team coordination.
I co-founded COMMposite, a French-language e-journal of young communication and media
researchers. I worked to the operation of a groupware for scientific arbitration purposes which
has been an innovative distance and local collaboration experiment.
