Le XVIIIe siècle est traversé par un courant de pensée caractérisé par la
recherche du bonheur individuel et la conviction que la raison conduit
l’humanité à sa perfection. C’est l’idée d’une sagesse nouvelle qui a peu à voir
avec la sagesse proposée par le christianisme. C’est l’âge des Lumières avec ses
valeurs : liberté, tolérance, raison, confiance dans le progrès scientifique. Quelle
a été l’attitude de l’Église face à cette nouvelle proposition de civilisation?
Accueil ou repli sur soi? Accommodement ou rejet? Une recherche pour
apprécier comment l’Église se présente au seuil de la modernité.
The 18th century was crossed by a thought caracterized with the research of
individual happiness and the conviction that reason alone could lead mankind
to its perfection. It was the idea of a new wisdom that didn’t have much to
do with Christian wisdom. It was the Age of Enlightenment with its values:
freedom, tolerance, reason, trust in scientific progress. What was the attitude
of the Church in front of that new civilization proposal? Welcome or withdrawal
into oneself? Compromise or rejection? This seminar will study how the Church
got into modernity.

The goal of this course is to show that a self-knowledge that aims at being
cross-cultural can ground a reflection on faith—Christian and non-Christian—
that is ecumenical. We shall discuss issues such as the presence of religious
experience in the Bible, in the Church Fathers and in the Medieval writers, the
accent put on religious experience since Schleiermacher, the viability of
religious experience as a theological category according to Lonergan, the
relations between the intellectual and the affective approach to God, the
integration of faith and reason, personal and collective authenticity, historical
mindedness, pluralism and truth, etc.

Ce cours voudrait montrer sous quelles formes, aux diverses époques, l’Église
est intervenue dans le déroulement de cette réalité humaine qu’est le mariage.
Plus largement, il se propose de revoir l’histoire du développement de la
doctrine du sacrement de mariage dans l’Église. Il devrait permettre de mieux
connaître ce sacrement « pas comme les autres » dont Gaudium et Spes a fort
heureusement renouvelé la compréhension.

Le séminaire tentera de redéfinir le concept de “réconciliation” de façon
actuelle, en reliant l’anthropologie et la christologie. Le projet est de mettre
au point une analogie de la réconciliation en partant d’Éphésiens 2,13-16, puis
en analysant les conditions actuelles d’une réconciliation collective et / ou d’un
pardon interpersonnel (vérité, justice, mémoire, etc.). Nous aurons recours et à
des expériences situées (Commission Vérité et Réconciliation) et à des apports
philosophiques (spécialement celui de Jacques Derrida). Au terme, il faudra
voir si les éléments retenus comme essentiels au plan humain sont valides ou
mutent lorsqu’on parle de la réconciliation accomplie par le Christ.
This research seminar will try to redefine the concept of « reconciliation » in
a modern way, connecting Anthropology with Christology. We intend to set
an analogy of reconciliation from Ephesians 2:13-16 and then an analysis of
current conditions of either a collective reconciliation and / or an interpersonal
forgiveness (truth, justice, memory, etc.). We will be helped by specific
experiences (Commission Truth and Reconciliation) and some Philosophical
input (especially from Jacques Derrida). In the end, we will have to verify that
the elements thought essential on the human point of view are valid or change
when it is spoken about the reconciliation performed by Christ.

Les catégories métaphysiques aristotéliciennes en vogue à partir du XIIIe
siècle en Occident dans leur version synthétisée par Saint-Thomas d’Aquin,
ont été rejetées par la science moderne en vue de la mathématisation de la
nature qui est devenue une nouvelle méthode d’investigation. En suivant le
développement des idées philosophiques et scientifiques dès leur naissance en
Antiquité à travers les penseurs modernes ( Descartes, Leibniz, Kant, Galilée)
jusqu’aux contemporains (Max Born, Werner Heisenberg, David Bohm, Einstein,
Eugene Wiegner), ce cours visera à élucider si une nouvelle extension des
catégories métaphysiques aristotéliciennes pourrait faire redécouvrir celles-ci
en tant qu’éléments théoriques de base soutendant les modèles scientifiques
comme le mécanisme, le dynamisme, la théorie des quanta, la relativité et la
théorie des cordes. A sufficient knowledge of French is required.
The metaphysical categories of Aristotle in vogue from the XIIIth century on
in the West in their synthesized version by Saint Thomas Aquinas, had been
rejected by modern science as obsolete for the new method of inquiry that
was to be the mathematisation of nature. Following the development of
philosophical and scientific ideas from their inception in Antiquity throughout
modern thinkers (Descartes, Leibniz, Kant, Galileo) up to contemporary ones
(Max Born, Werner Heisenberg, David Bohm, Einstein, Eugene Wiegner), this
course will aim at clarifying whether the metaphysical categories of Aristotle
could be given a new extension and thus prove to be the fundamental
theoretical principles underlying the scientific models of mechanism, dynamism,
relativity, quantum mechanics and string theory.

First, we will review the essential properties of marriage. Then, we will see the
qualities required by Canon Law for a valid commitment. Afterwards, we will
study the form of the celebration of marriage, the impediments, the form, the
registrations, mixed marriages, the Pauline privilege and the convalidation
of marriage.
