Scène 1 (Auteur, Aviateur, Le Petit Prince 1)
Auteur: I had an accident with my plane in the Desert of Sahara, six years ago. Something was
broken in my engine. I had to attempt the difficult repairs all alone. It was a question of life or death
for me: I had scarcely enough drinking water to last a week. I was all alone among the sands…
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- C’est quoi, cette chose-là? (What is it, this thing ?)
L'AVIATEUR:
- Ce n’est pas une chose. C’est un avion. Il vole.
(This is not a thing. It is an airplane. It can fly.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Comment? Tu es tombe du ciel ! (What ? You fell from the sky !)
L'AVIATEUR:
- Oui. (Yes)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Comme moi! Ça c’est drôle… S'il te plaît, dessine-moi un mouton!
(Same for me! It’s funny… If you please-- draw me a sheep!)
L'AVIATEUR:
- Oh! Je sais la géographie, l'histoire, le calcul... je ne sais pas dessiner. Voilà.
(You know, I studied geography, history, math… I cannot draw… OK. Here it is.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Ah! C’est parfait. Tu crois qu'il mange beaucoup d'herbe?
(That is exactly the way I wanted it! Do you think that it will eat a great deal of grass?)
L'AVIATEUR:
- Pourquoi? (Why ?)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Parce que chez moi, c'est tout petit.
(Because where I live everything is very small...)
(il dessine son astéroïde et le montre au public)
Coucher de soleil
Scène 2 (Auteur, La Rose, Le Petit Prince 2)
Auteur. I had learned that he came from another planet. On the little prince's planet the flowers had
always been very simple. But one day, from a seed blown from no one knew where, a new flower
had bloomed; a flower that was not like any other small sprouts on his planet. The shrub soon
stopped growing, and began to get ready to produce a flower. The little prince, who was present at
the first appearance of the huge bud, felt at once that some sort of miraculous apparition would
emerge from it.
Then one morning, exactly at sunrise, she suddenly showed herself.
LA ROSE:
- Ah! Je me réveille à peine… Je vous demande pardon… Je suis toute décoiffée…
(Ah! I am scarcely awake. I beg that you will excuse me. My petals are still all disarranged...)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Vous êtes belle. (Oh! How beautiful you are!)
LA ROSE:
- N'est-ce pas? Et je suis née en même temps que le soleil. C’est le temps du petit déjeuner!
(Am I not? And I was born at the same moment as the sun... I think it is time for breakfast!)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Elle est belle, mais un peu capricieuse. (She is beautiful, but a bit capricious.)
LA ROSE:
- Avec mes quatre épines, je n'ai pas peur des tigres!
(Having my four thorns, I am not afraid of the tigers !)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Il n'y a pas de tigre sur ma planète.
(There are no tigers on my planet.)
LA ROSE:
- Je hais les courants d'air. Vous n'auriez pas un paravent?
(shaking from cold: I have a horror of drafts. I suppose you wouldn't have a screen?)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Cette fleur est bien compliquée… (This flower is a very complex creature…)
LA ROSE tousse. The rose coughs.
Scène 3 (Auteur, Le Roi, Le Petit Prince 3)
Auteur. The little prince had taken seriously words which were without importance, and it made
him very unhappy. I believe that he flew with a flock of wild birds. On the first asteroid lived a
king.
LE ROI:
- Ah, voilà un sujet. (Ah! Here is a subject.)
LE PETIT PRINCE bâille.
LE ROI:
- On ne bâille pas. (It is contrary to etiquette to yawn.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Pardon, mais je suis fatigué... (I am sorry, but I am tired.)
LE ROI:
- Alors, je t'ordonne de bâiller. Bâille ! (Ah, then I order you to yawn. Yawn!)
LE PETIT PRINCE yawns.
- Sire, sur quoi régnez-vous? (Sire-- over what do you rule?)
LE ROI:
- Sur tout. (Over everything.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Dans ce cas, faites-moi plaisir. Ordonnez au soleil de se coucher.
(In this case, do me that kindness... Order the sun to set...)
LE ROI:
-Tout de suite, je ne peux pas.
(Not right away.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Et quand cela sera-t-il? (When will that be?)
LE ROI (looks at his watch):
- Ce soir. Vers... sept heures quarante.
(That will be this evening, about twenty minutes to eight.)
LE PETIT PRINCE (bâille):
- J'ai compris. Je vais repartir.
(I understand. And now I think I will go on my way.)
Scène 4 (Auteur, Le Vaniteux, Le Petit Prince 4)
Auteur. The second planet was inhabited by a conceited, vain man.
LE VANITEUX:
- Ah, voilà la visite d'un admirateur.
(Ah! I am about to receive a visit from an admirer.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Vous avez un drôle de chapeau.
(That is a queer hat you are wearing.)
LE VANITEUX:
- Mais c'est pour saluer. Frappe dans tes mains. (il soulève son chapeau).
(It is a hat for salutes. Clap your hands, one against the other.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- C’est amusant. (This is entertaining.)
LE VANITEUX:
- Est-ce que tu m’admire? (Do you really admire me?)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Qu’est-ce que c’est, admirer ? (What does that mean-- 'admire'?)
LE VANITEUX:
- C’est dire que je suis l’homme le plus beau de ma planète.
(That means, you say I am the handsomest man on this planet.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Mais, tu es le seul sur ta planète !
(But you are the only man on your planet!)
LE VANITEUX:
- J'aime tellement qu'on m'aime! (I like so much to be admired !)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Les grandes personnes sont bizarres…
(The grown-ups are certainly very odd.)
Scène 5 (Auteur, Le Buveur, Le Petit Prince 5)
Auteur. The next planet was inhabited by a tippler, a drunkard. This was a very short visit, but it
plunged the little prince into deep aversion.
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Que fais-tu là?
(What are you doing there?)
LE BUVEUR:
-Je bois. (I am drinking.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Comme c'est triste! Pourquoi bois-tu?
(That’s sad! Why are you drinking?)
LE BUVEUR:
- Pour oublier.
(So that I may forget.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Pour oublier quoi?
(Forget what?)
LE BUVEUR:
- Oublier que j'ai honte.
(Forget that I am ashamed.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Que tu as honte de quoi?
(Ashamed of what?)
LE BUVEUR:
- Que j'ai honte de boire…
(Ashamed of drinking…)
Scène 6 (Auteur, Le Businessman, Le Petit Prince 6)
Auteur. The fourth planet belonged to a businessman. This man was so busy that he did not even
raise his head at the little prince's arrival.
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Bonjour!
LE BUSINESSMAN:
- Bonjour. Ça me fait donc cinq cent un millions.
(That makes five-hundred-and-one-million.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Cinq cent un millions de quoi? (Five hundred million what?)
LE BUSINESSMAN:
- Millions de petites choses que l’on voit dans le ciel.
(Millions of those little objects, which one sees in the sky.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Des mouches? (Flies?)
LE BUSINESSMAN:
- Mais non, des petites choses qui brillent. (Oh, no. Little golden objects.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Ah ! Des étoiles? Et que fais-tu de ces étoiles ? (Ah! You mean the stars? What do you do with
these stars?)
LE BUSINESSMAN:
- Je les possède. (I own them.) Je puis écrire (writes 501000000 on a big piece of paper and puts it
in the big bank.)
Scène 7 (Auteur, Le Serpent, Le Petit Prince 7)
Auteur. The seventh planet he visited was the Earth. When the little prince arrived on the Earth, he
was very much surprised not to see any people. He was beginning to be afraid he had come to the
wrong planet, when a spiral of gold, the color of the moonlight, flashed across the sand.
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Sur quelle planète suis-je tombé?
(What planet is this on which I have come down?)
LE SERPENT:
- Sur la Terre, en Afrique. Et toi, tu viens d’où ?
(This is the Earth; this is Africa. And where do you come from?)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Regarde ma planète, elle est juste au-dessus de nous.
(Look at my planet. It is right there above us.)
LE SERPENT:
- Elle est belle. (It is beautiful.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Où sont les hommes? On est un peu seul dans le désert.
(Where are the men? It is a little lonely in the desert...)
LE SERPENT:
- On est seul aussi chez les hommes. (It is also lonely among men.)
Scène 8 (Le Renard, Le Petit Prince 8)
LE RENARD:
- Bonjour!
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Bonjour! Où es-tu?
(Good morning ! Where are you ?)
LE RENARD (hides behind the tree):
- Je suis un renard. (I am a fox.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Viens jouer avec moi, je suis triste.
(Come and play with me. I am so unhappy.)
LE RENARD:
- Je ne peux pas jouer avec toi, je ne suis pas apprivoisé.
(I cannot play with you. I am not tamed.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Pardon… Qu'est-ce que c’est, "apprivoiser"?
(Please excuse me…What does that mean-- 'tame'?)
LE RENARD:
- C’est simple. Si tu m'apprivoises, alors nous aurons besoin l'un de l'autre. Tu seras pour moi
unique au monde, je serai pour toi unique au monde.
(That’s simple. If you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the
world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world...)
Scène 9 (les roses, Le Petit Prince 9)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Bonjour!
LES ROSES:
- Bonjour!
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Qui êtes-vous ?
(Who are you ?)
LES ROSES:
- Je suis une rose… Je suis une rose… Je suis une rose…
(I am a rose.)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- Ah bon? Vous ressemblez toutes à ma fleur.
(Oh yes? You all look like my flower.)
LES ROSES:
- Nous sommes des roses…
(We are roses.)
Les roses chantent :
Nous sommes toutes des roses,
Heureuses et amoureuses,
Nous sommes les plus belles
Des fleurs de ce jardin…
(We are all roses,
Happy and loving,
We are the most beautiful
Flowers in your garden…)
Scène 10 (Auteur, Le Petit Prince 10, La Rose, Le Renard, les roses)
LE PETIT PRINCE:
- J’ai compris : Les hommes ne sont pas contents.
(I got it : The men are not happy.)
La ROSE:
- Pourtant ce qu'ils cherchent… peut être trouvé dans une seule rose ou un peu d'eau
(And yet what they are looking for … could be found in one single rose , or in a little water.)
Le RENARD (entre):
- Les yeux sont aveugles. Il faut chercher avec le coeur…
(The eyes are blind. One must look with the heart...)
LE RENARD, LE PETIT PRINCE, LA ROSE:
- On ne voit bien qu’avec le cœur…
(It is only with the heart that one can see rightly.)
