MEDIA RELEASE May 8, 2014 Contact: Brandon Thoms, Director of Public Relations Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians Cell: (715) 604‐2498 LAC DU FLAMBEAU TRIBE ISSUES 28 EXCLUSIONS In an ongoing effort to stem illegal drug activity, violence and criminal elements on the Reservation, on Monday, May 5th, the Lac du Flambeau Tribal Police began notifying 28 individuals of a Tribal resolution that requires them to leave the Reservation within 48 hours. The resolution was a result of action taken earlier that day by the Tribal Council to exclude the 28 individuals from coming within the exterior boundaries of the Tribe's Reservation. The resolution prohibits the named from returning to the Reservation for a period of five years, and provides civil and criminal penalty for potential offenders. None of 28 individuals are Tribal Members. The action is the second by the Lac du Flambeau Tribe within the last year. In August 2013, the Tribe removed 53 non‐Tribal Members from Tribal lands. In March 2013, the Tribe declared a State of Emergency in response to a surge in crime, violence and drug related overdose deaths in the community. "We have a moral and ethical obligation to 1
protect our Elders, children and families," said Tribal President Tom Maulson. "These are very tough decisions; removing someone from our Reservation is not something we take lightly and we do so with heavy hearts. The end goal is to ensure a safe and wholesome environment for our law abiding Tribal Members, residents and visitors. I want to stress that as long as you are not involved in illegal drug or other criminal activity, you are welcome in our community," added President Maulson. Chief Bob Brandenburg with the Lac du Flambeau Police Department said those excluded from the Reservation have been repeat offenders involved in various criminal activities including illegal drug trafficking, assault, and/or gang affiliation. "The problem was of such a nature that we were forced to again take this drastic action. It is a preventative measure, and has a deterrent effect on crime on the Reservation," said Chief Brandenburg. The exclusions are part of Tribal‐wide initiatives that address chemical dependency, drug abuse, poverty, crime and other challenges facing the community. The Tribe will continue to work with its programs, community coalitions and partners, and law enforcement to increase the quality of life for Tribal Members, Descendants and families.
