Healing in the shrines of the Antique Greek world : from Meibom to the Edelsteins, some historiographic remarks Down to the end of the XIXth century, once the thesis of “magnetism” dear to Messmer’s disciples had died out, the various approaches to the activity of the healing shrines of the Antique Greek world and the recoveries that occurred there were essentially founded on connecting them up to the history of medicine: the point then was to expose the fool’s game at the centre of which the patient, a naïve votary, gave himself over to a personnel who, while acting in conformity with the medical knowledge of the day, were also past masters in the art of “make-believe”. The publication of the Epidauros recovery steles in the eighteen-eighties was not to bring about the rupture that could have been expected but temporarily carry on that structured approach consisting of a twofold polarity and an opposition between “science” and “religion”. The unadventurous emer- anabase 13.indd Sec12:315 24/02/11 15:04:08 RÉSUMÉS gence of studies founded rather on the complementarity of the approaches was made possible only when the rite of incubation became an object defined as a ritualised procedure integrated into the religious system of the Greeks. “Eunuch and Kaiser”: Dürrenmatt, Justinian, Theodora, Byzantium and the totalitarian State F. Dürrenmatt, who with Romulus der Grosse (1949) had already written a comedy located in late Antiquity, devoted himself to a new theatre project at the beginning of the nineteen sixties: Eunuch and Kaiser, dealing with Justinian’s empire and never completed. In this article are analyzed the modalities of the reception of late Antiquity and the Byzantine Empire in the reflection of the Swiss writer, who saw in the late Roman Empire and Byzantium a mirror and model of his times; are also analyzed the reasons why the project was abandoned after the writing of the first act. Parole chiave : Giustiniano, Teodora, Impero bizantino, ricezione, Dürrenmatt, totalitarismo, cattolicesimo, Unione Sovietica. Mots-clés : Justinien, Théodora, Empire byzantin, réception, Dürrenmatt, totalitarisme, catholicisme, Union soviétique. 316 anabase 13.indd Sec12:316 24/02/11 15:04:08 RÉSUMÉS Keywords : Justinian, Theodora, Byzantine Empire, reception, Dürrenmatt, totalitarianism, Catholicism, Soviet Union. David and Ashpenaz: on some present-day readings of Daniel 1, 7and 9 The first chapter of the book of Daniel has been the object -like other passages in the Bibleof new readings in the course of recent years. Some have seen in the relationship between the eunuch Ashpenaz and Daniel deported to the court of Babylon a homosexual relationship; others have read in the nicknames given to the three young men names of a homophobic nature. Those are committed readings which seek to demonstrate that the biblical text casts a benevolent eye on homosexuality and condemns homophobia. Going over the whole dossier, the present article analyzes the biblical verses referred to and relies on ancient sources and contemporary studies in view of bringing a scientific and historical light and deciding whether such readings are founded and possible. Mots-clés : Livre de Daniel, exégèse contemporaine, Ashpenaz, eunuque, homosexualité, homophobie. Keywords : Book of Daniel, contemporary exegesis, Ashpenaz, eunuch, homosexuality, homophobia. 317 anabase 13.indd Sec12:317 24/02/11 15:04:08 RÉSUMÉS The world of the Satyricon and the house of Pliny the Younger The author of the Satyricon did actually know Pliny the Younger’s correspondence. He drew from it a certain number of themes or characteristics of the intellectual life, also of the condition of the freed slaves at the beginning of the second century. Those parallels provide a safe argument against identifying the author of the Satyricon with the consular Petronius mentioned by Tacitus. They establish that the novel was written after the year 107 and perhaps after 111, very likely at the beginning of the second century. Lastly they strikingly confirm the assumption that sees in Encolpius, Pliny the Younger’s freed man, the author of the Satyricon. Keywords : Petronius, Satyricon, date of writing and author, Encolpius, Pliny the Younger. Bickerman and Lewy This paper examines the friendship of Elias Bickerman (1897-1981) and Hans (Yohanan) Lewy (1901-1945), setting them in context as students of Eduard Norden (1868-1941) in Berlin. It focuses on the different ways in which Norden, Bickerman and Lewy met the challenges to Classical Studies in the Weimar era, in particular those that were dealt with by Stephan George and his disciples. Mots-clés : Eduard Norden, Elias Bickerman, Hans (Yohanan) Lewy, Gershom Scholem, Stefan George. Keywords : Eduard Norden, Elias Bickerman, Hans (Yohanan) Lewy, Gershom Scholem, Stefan George. Diderot, Vanini and Socratic courage A great admirer of Socrates, Diderot compares the Athenian’s death with Vanini’s, the Italian free thinker burnt at Toulouse in 1619. For the father of the Encyclopedia, those two thinkers manifested a high philosophical courage in paying with their lives their steadfast search for truth. How justify that when you are an atheist and do not believe in after life ? By vindicating a materialism trusting in posterity’s judgment and mankind’s progress, Diderot upholds this position against the sarcasms of his friends Naigeon and Falconet who, for their part, ruled out such a risk, taking shelter behind a cynical, individualistic materialism. Keywords : Diderot, Vanini, atheism, materialism, posterity’s judgment, Socratic courage. At the origin of historical anthropology: Louis Gernet reader of Hermann Usener The influence of Hermann Usener (1834-1905), a German philologist and historian of religions, over the French hellenist Louis Gernet (1882-1962) has not as yet been the object of a thoroughgoing study. In Gernet’s notes on the relationships between mythology and language, dating approximately from the 1940’s, a great many quotations from Usener are to be found. Such considerations led Gernet to sketch out in La notion mystique de la valeur en Grèce the connections between several legendary stories and within the same story. In that text he develops revolutionary ideas suggested by Usener in the Sintfluthsagen (1899) and in Mythologie (1904) thanks to the contribution of historical psychology. Ignace Meyerson (1888-1983) the founder of that discipline had in his turn clarified his thought under the influence of Ernst Cassirer (1874-1945) the German philosopher who had in Sprache und Mythos (1925) commented upon 319 anabase 13.indd Sec12:319 24/02/11 15:04:08 RÉSUMÉS Usener’s Die Götternamen (1896). It is through that exceptional triangulation that we can go back to the origins of historical anthropology in France. What was at stake in 1800 around Coray’s edition of the Hippocratic treatise Of airs, waters and places The edition of the Hippocratic treatise Of airs, waters and places which Adiamantos Coray published in Paris in 1800 is a groundbreaking philological work. It is also the work of an emigrant proud of his native country and hostile to Asiatic despotism. Doctor of the Montpellier School of Medicine, he advocated a form of return to Hippocrates. Coray must also be assessed in comparison with Montesquieu on the question of climatic determinism and slavery.
