RACE REPORT, MACAU. Judging by the result of the 2008 edition of the Asia-Pacific KF1
Championship, the favourite of the 2009 World Championship to be held on the same Coloane-Macau circuit is already known. And in fact it does not come as a surprise: already
crowned European and World Champion this year, the Italian Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart-Vortex)
has added yet another line to his enviable list of results: having set the fastest lap time in
practice and emerged as leader after the qualifying heats, Ardigo prevailed in the final, leading from flag to flag without ever being really challenged. His rivals did nevertheless put up
a creditable performance. Indeed, the Italian Sauro Cesetti (Birel-Parilla) carried off the prefinal and then was runner-up in the final. Setting the fastest lap time in the final, his Czech
team-mate, Libor Toman (Birel-Parilla), finished fourth ahead of Jack Harvey (Birel-Parilla),
impressive for his first participation in the top category. After a very good start, the young
Briton held second place early in the final, before giving in to Cesetti’s attacks. But whereas
he seemed capable of marking his début in KF1 with a podium, a water leak in his radiator
created overheat in his engine, of which Manuel Renaudie (Gillard-Parilla) and Toman Libor
took advantage in the final lap. Among other good performers, there was another beginner
in KF1, Britain’s Robert Foster-Jones (FA Kart-Vortex), who started 19th and finished in a fine
sixth place, ahead of experienced Drivers such as Armand Convers (PCR-PCR), Alessandro
Bressan (Kosmic-Vortex) and Davide Gaggianesi (FA Kart-Vortex). Achieving a very good third
fastest practice time, the Japanese Katsuta Takamoto (Birel-Parilla) was forced to retire from
the final. The best classified Asian Driver in the final was the Malay Aaron Lim Say Joon (Birel-Parilla), tenth.
Juniors were also part of the show at Macau. Already entered in the 2007 edition, the Spaniard Carlos Sainz Jr (FA Kart-Vortex) dominated the event. The son of the double World Rally
Champion landed the final with a lead of over 5 seconds on the Italo-Russian Danil Kvyat (FA
Kart-Vortex) and the Italian Vittorio Ghirelli (Tony Kart-Vortex). Fourth and setting the fastest
time in the final, the German Lucas Wolf (Energy-VKR) finished ahead of the American-Swede
Gustavo Menezes (Tony Kart-Vortex) and the Dutch lady Driver Beitske Visser (Kosmic-Vortex-D). Even though it did not really materialise with good results in the final, the non-Europeans who performed best were the Malay Bryan Mehta (Birel-XTR), third in practice, and the
New Zealander Arie Hutton (Tony Kart-Vortex), fourth after the heats.
The dress rehearsal in which the Macau Organisers, the Drivers and the Teams took part
within the framework of this 2008 CIK-FIA Asia-Pacific Championship augurs well for a great
World Championship in 2009. Its date must carefully be noted: see you on 9-11 October 2009
at Coloane-Macau!

LA COURSE, MACAU. S’il faut en juger par le résultat de l’édition 2008 du Championnat
d’Asie-Pacifique de KF1, le favori du Championnat du Monde 2009, qui se disputera sur le
même circuit de Coloane-Macau est déjà connu. Et à vrai dire, sans surprise : déjà couronné
Champion d’Europe et du Monde cette année, l’Italien Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart-Vortex) vient
encore d’ajouter une ligne à son enviable palmarès : auteur du meilleur temps des essais
chronométrés et après avoir émergé en tête des manches qualificatives, Ardigo s’est imposé
en finale, menant la course de bout en bout sans jamais vraiment être inquiété. Ses rivaux
n’ont pas démérité pour autant. Ainsi, l’Italien Sauro Cesetti (Birel-Parilla) s’est-il adjugé la
préfinale, puis la seconde place en finale. Auteur du meilleur temps en finale, son équipier
tchèque, Libor Toman (Birel-Parilla) s’est classé quatrième, devant Jack Harvey (Birel-Parilla),
impressionnant pour sa première participation dans la catégorie-reine. Réussissant un très
bon départ, le jeune Britannique a occupé la seconde place en début de finale, avant de céder
aux attaques de Cesetti. Mais alors qu’il semblait en mesure de ponctuer ses débuts en KF1
d’un podium, une fuite d’eau de son radiateur causait une surchauffe de son moteur, ce dont
profitaient Manuel Renaudie (Gillard-Parilla) et Toman Libor dans le dernier tour. Parmi les
bonnes prestations, on relevait encore celle d’un autre débutant en KF1, le Britannique Robert
Foster-Jones (FA Kart-Vortex), parti 19ème et arrivé bon sixième, devant des Pilotes d’expérience comme Armand Convers (PCR-PCR), Alessandro Bressan (Kosmic-Vortex) et Davide
Gaggianesi (FA Kart-Vortex). Très bon troisième des essais, le Japonais Katsuta Takamoto
(Birel-Parilla) était contraint à l’abandon en finale. Le meilleur Pilote asiatique classé en finale
a été le Malais Aaron Lim Say Joon (Birel-Parilla), dixième.
Les Juniors étaient également de la partie à Macau. Déjà du voyage en 2007, l’Espagnol Carlos Sainz Jr (FA Kart-Vortex) a dominé l’épreuve. Le fils du double Champion du Monde des
Rallyes a remporté la finale avec une avance supérieure à 5 secondes sur l’Italo-Russe Danil
Kvyat (FA Kart-Vortex) et l’Italien Vittorio Ghirelli (Tony Kart-Vortex). Quatrième et auteur
du meilleur temps en finale, l’Allemand Lucas Wolf (Energy-VKR) a devancé l’Américano-suédois Gustavo Menezes (Tony Kart-Vortex) et la Néerlandaise Beitske Visser (Kosmic-VortexD). Même si cela ne s’est pas vraiment traduit par un résultat concret en finale, les Pilotes
non-européens les plus performants ont été le Malais Bryan Mehta (Birel-XTR), troisième des
essais, et le Néo-Zélandais Arie Hutton (Tony Kart-Vortex), quatrième à l’issue des manches.
La répétition générale à laquelle se sont livrés les Organisateurs de Macau, les Pilotes et les
Équipes dans le cadre de ce Championnat d’Asie-Pacifique CIK-FIA 2008 laisse augurer un
grand Championnat du Monde en 2009. Que la date soit notée précieusement : rendez-vous
les 9-11 octobre 2009 à Coloane-Macau !
