REVUE DE PRESSE January 2016 pages 83 / 90 Panel tasting: 83 Gigondas tasted OUTSTANDING (2 WINES 95/100) Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane 2013 18.5/20 (95/100) This lonely, high, almost abstract vineyard represents the dream and foresight of Pierre Amadieu, who planted vines and olives, and grazed sheep here for the benefit of their droppings in the early 1950s. 65% Grenache (planted in 1950) and 20% Mourvèdre (1985, some 1952) provide a wonderful platform. The Mourvèdre undergoes carbonic maceration, and a mix of new oak casks and large old 30hl barrels give a wine that's clean, long and grounded, gaining local imprint as it ages. Drink 2017-2030. Simon Field -18.5/20 - Pleasing nose of wood smoke, cloves, cassis and incense. The palate has an unexpected dimension of sweetness that works well with the relatively austere, spicy finish. Very complete and very agreable. My top three / At above 400 metres elevation, this is a northeast facing exemplar of poor soils, old vines and fantastic wine. The juxtaposition of sweetness and spice impressed, as did the integration of Mourvèdre and the wooden barrels, both done with subtlety and panache. John Livingstone Learmonth - 18.75/20 - The nose combines garrigue herbs with plum fruit, and has a baked aspect about it. The palate serves compressed juice, gives an image of herbs and small, compact grapes; a walk in the vineyards in October. Its depth comes from within. Really assured, with understated persistence. My top three / Top-grade wine can whistle an image straight into your glass. Here it is one of an autumn walk in the isolated vineyards of this high-up estate, surrounded by garrigue brush and olive trees. Genuinely deep, very lively, a grand do. Marcel Orford-Williams - 18.5/20 - Shows gorgeous spice on the palate and nose. There is real lift here. It's lovely and I love it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED (2 WINES 92/100) Gigondas Le Pas de l’Aigle 2012 17.75/20 (92/100) A big, confident and somewhat assertive style. There is an innate oiliness that speaks well of the south. The palate runs with gourmet fruit, and has a tasty paradise at its centre. Dramatic Gigondas! Cask sample. Unusually deep ruby. Rather watery, without focus, though clearly with lots of extraction. Tannins on the end. Set for the long term. A bit of heat on the end - just a slight lack of freshness in the middle. 2014 Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane 16 / 20 Tasted blind. Cask sample. blueish crimson. A bit cheesy on the nose but with lots of carefully primed oak. Toasty. Not especially Gigondas. Only medium weight. Fairly dry tannins on the very cool end. 2014 Gigondas Romane Machotte 16.5+ / 20 Tasted blind. Cask sample. Rich and quite vibrant on the nose. Well focused for the future with the liquorice and very ripe red fruits. Pretty impressive for 2014. Just a bit inky on the finish. December 2014 2013 Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane 16 / 20 Greyish purple. Simple and slightly industrial nose. Then lots of sweet fruit. Some drying tannins on the finish but generally a little tentative. Awkward, scrawny finish. 2013 Gigondas Romane Machotte 17.5 / 20 Mid ruby. Dense, quite tense and with real interest and depth. Definitely dry on the end but not drying. Lots of substance and a lot other than just simple Grenache. Extremely appetising. 2013 Vacqueyras La Grangelière 15.5 / 20 Greyish dark crimson. Raw, greenish notes on the nose. Sweet start but thick and not much freshness. Hard work, especially on the finish. Medium-bodied, nicely balanced and thoroughly enjoyable, I don't think it will made old bones, but it has loads of charm and will drink nicely for 4-6 years. 2014 Saint Joseph Les Capelets 86-88 points The 2014 St Joseph les Capelets offers lots of spice, cured meats and mulled berries in medium-bodied, supple, straightforward package. It should drink nicely on release and last for 4-5 years. 2013 Saint Joseph Les Capelets 87 points The 2013 St Joseph les Capelets is similar to the 2014 with lots of spice, pepper, cured meats, and darker cherry and rapsberry fruit. Coming from a cooler vintage, it nevertheless has good sweetness of fruit, ripe tannin and a medium-bodied, enjoyable personality that is ideal for drinking over the coming 4-5 years. June 2015 2014 Pierre Amadieu Cotes du Rhone Roulepierre rosé 90 points I love the 2014 Cotes du Rhone Roulepierre Rosé, and this blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Cinsault and 20% Syrah is crisp and lively, with classic orange rind, citrus blossom and fresh cherry-like aromas and flavors. The acidity is beautifully integrated, it has outstanding purity of fruit, and will drink beautifully over the coming 7-8 months. It's another killer value in Rosé. 2014 Pierre Amadieu Gigondas Romane Machotte rosé 90 points Another terrific rosé from this estate, the 2014 Gigondas Romane Machotte Rosé is made from a direct press of 60% Grenache, 25% Cinsault and 15% Syrah that was raised all in stainless steel. Beautiful on all accounts, it has lots of white peach, strawberry, flowers and rose petal-like aromas and flavors, medium-bodied richness, and a seamless, silky, rounded texture. Possessing both freshness and richness, it will be versatile on the dinner table and drink well through the end of 2015. It's high quality, and while not cheap, it delivers on the quality front. 20 janvier 2016 Page 7/10 201 ROUTE DES PRINCES D’ORANGE - 84190 GIGOND AS- FRAN CE T E L : + 33 (0 )4 90 65 84 08 F A X : + 33 (0 )4 90 65 82 14 M a i l : p i e r r e .a m a d i e u @ p i e r r e - a m a d i e u .c o m - w w w . p i e r r e - a m a d i e u .c o m REVUE DE PRESSE January 2015 – Southern Rhône 2013 Gigondas Le Pas de l’Aigle 88-90 points The top Gigondas of the estate is the Le Pas de l’Aigle, and it comes from the highest elevation plots in the appellation and limestone and clay soils. Aged 24 months in 100 hectoliter oak casks, the 2013 is a more mid-weight example of this cuvee, yet still possibly outstanding. It exhibits pretty, perfumed notes of basil, mint, black raspberry, spice and mesquite to go with a medium-bodied, fresh, lively and silky style on the palate. Given the longer élevage with this cuvee, I’m sure it will be reasonably approachable on release, and drink nicely for upward of a decade. 2013 Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane 87-89 points Darker in color than the Romane Machotte, the 2013 Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane comes from higher elevation parcels and is a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Mourvèdre and 15% Syrah. It exhibits plenty of chocolate-laced dark fruits, earth and hints of minerality in its medium-bodied, rich, yet soft and sexy style. It will shine on release and evolve nicely through 2023. 2013 Gigondas Romane Machotte 86-88 points An exotic, perfumed and savory Gigondas, the 2013 Gigondas Romane Machotte (80% Grenache and 20% Syrah) offers notes of black raspberry, dried flowers, menthol and dried spices. Medium-bodied, supple, pure and elegant on the palate, it has a forward feel in its texture and tannin profile, all suggesting it’s best consumed in its first 6-8 years of life. 2012 Gigondas Le Pas de l’Aigle 90-92 points What should be a classic Gigondas, Pierre Amadieu’s 2012 Gigondas Le Pas de L’Aigle (85% Grenache and 15% Syrah) comes all from the highest elevation plots in Gigondas (400-meters) and limestone soils. Black raspberry, new leather, violets and tons of spice all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, focused and structured effort, and it has terrific typicity and length. Aged all in larger oak casks, drink it anytime over the coming decade or more. 2013 Vacqueyras La Grangelière 88 points A blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah that was raised in equal parts large oak casks and older, small barrels, the 2013 Vacqueyras La Grangeliere is an upfront, delicious, fruit-loaded beauty that has plenty of sweet spice, berry fruit and crushed flower-like aromas and flavors. Drink it over the coming 4-5 years. January 2015 – Northern Rhône 2013 Crozes Hermitage Les Caladières 87-89+ points More classic in style than the 2012, with a focused, medium-bodied, nicely concentrated feel, the Crozes Hermitage Les Caladieres exhibits textbook Syrah red and black fruits, spice, leather and underbrush. Medium-bodied, nicely textured and sweet tannin, it should drink nicely on release. 2013 Saint Joseph Les Capelets 86-89 points Like the 2012, the 2013 St Joseph Les Capelets offers attractive notes of dried spices, potpourri sweet raspberry and blackberry fruit to go with medium-bodied, juicy feel on the palate. The tannin has some edge, but I suspect it will round into once in bottle. December 2013 2012 Gigondas Le Pas de l’Aigle 91-93+ points The limited production, 2012 Gigondas le Pas de L'Aigle is the star of the lineup. Comprised of 85% Grenache and 15% Syrah that will spend 24 months in oak casks, it dishes out gorgeous tobacco leaf, cedar, ground herbs and assorted spicedriven notes that are all grounded by a core of sweet red and black berry fruit. Medium to full-bodied, structured and tannic, it will need a handful of years once released to integrate, and should cruise for 12-15 years. Drink 2016-2027. 20 janvier 2016 Page 8/10 201 ROUTE DES PRINCES D’ORANGE - 84190 GIGOND AS- FRAN CE T E L : + 33 (0 )4 90 65 84 08 F A X : + 33 (0 )4 90 65 82 14 M a i l : p i e r r e .a m a d i e u @ p i e r r e - a m a d i e u .c o m - w w w . p i e r r e - a m a d i e u .c o m REVUE By Josh Raynolds DE PRESSE JAN 2015 2013 Gigondas Domaine Grand Romane 91-93 points Bright violet color. Sexy aromas of cassis, cherry liqueur, fresh flowers and incense. Supple and pliant on the palate, but with juicy acidity giving spine to the deep black and blue fruit and floral pastille flavors. Becomes spicier and livelier with air, picking up a smoky nuance that carries through a long, sweet, youthfully tannic finish. 2013 Gigondas Romane Machotte 90-92 points Vivid ruby. Powerful cherry and blackberry scents are complemented by vanilla and liquorice, with a note of peppery spices emerging with aeration. Shows very good energy and focus on the palate, offering appealingly sweet red and dark berry flavors and a flourish of liquorice pastille. Finishes supple and long, with very good power, round tannins and resonating spiciness. 2013 Gigondas Grande Reserve Le Pas De L'Aigle 91-93 points Brilliant ruby. A heady, complex bouquet of ripe red berries, cherry liqueur, incense and lavender, with a mineral accent that becomes more pronounced with air. Sappy and penetrating, with intense black raspberry and floral pastille flavors sharpened by tangy acidity. Silky tannins shape the clinging, sharply focused finish. 2014 Gigondas Romane Machotte rosé 90 points Pale pink. A lively, highly perfumed bouquet evokes fresh strawberry, tangerine and white flowers, along with a chalky mineral nuance. Stony and sharply focused on the palate, offering intense red fruit and citrus zest flavors that smooth out and put on weight with air. Finishes bright and long, leaving mineral and floral pastille notes behind. 2013 Vacqueyras La Grangelière 89- 91 points Vivid ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of earthy cherry pit and cassis are lifted by a hint of peppery spices. Firm and sharply focused on entry, offering chewy dark fruit flavors and a touch of licorice. Aeration brings out sweeter red fruits, which carry through a long, smoke-tinged finish. This looks like it will be a slow ager. by Josh Raynolds JAN 2014 2012 Gigondas Grande Reserve Le Pas De L'Aigle 92-94 points Saturated ruby. Sexy black and blue fruit aromas are complicated by vanilla, licorice and woodsmoke. Fleshy cassis and blueberry flavors are lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity and a peppery nuance.
