InternationaI Numismatic e-News – INeN, No. 2 (July 2005)
Electronic Newsletter of the INC / CIN
The International Numismatic Commission is using a new instrument to provide
informations about scientific numismatic activities. These e-News will be sent from time to
time in addition to the International Numismatic Newsletter (INN).
The e-News inform about conferences and other events and will provide notes on
museums, new websites and books, work in progress and personalia.
President’s Note
La disparition le 9 juin 2005 de Carmen Alfaro As€ns, conservateur en chef du d•partement
numismatique du Mus•e arch•ologique national de Madrid, vice-pr•sidente de la Commission
Internationale de Numismatique, a plong• tous ses amis et coll‚gues dans une profonde tristesse.
Un hommage rapide lui est rendu dans l’INN 42, avant qu’un biobibliographie compl•te lui soit
d‚di‚e dans le Compte rendu 52 et qu’un hommage officiel soit organis‚ ƒ Madrid en octobre
prochain.
Il faut malheureusement faire ‚galement ‚tat de la mort de l’un de nos plus ‚minents membres
honoraires, Kenneth Jenkins, disparu le 21 mai. Il avait ‚t‚ Keeper du d‚partement des Monnaies
et M‚dailles du British Museum entre 1965 et 1978 et tout chercheur en numismatique grec lui est
redevable pour ses ‚crits. Une biobibliographie lui sera ‚galement consacr‚e dans le Compte
rendu 52.

International Numismatic Symposium, Smoln‚k (Slovakia):
Extinct Mints, their history and significance
The Slovak Numismatic Society and Municipal Office of the town of Smoln€k organize a
numismatic symposium in environment of the historical mine and mint town of Smoln€k on 15-18
September 2005. The symposium’s main goal is to present and compare new knowledge from the
widest field of historical, numismatic, economic and technical research about the activity of extinct
mints not only in Slovakia, but also in other countries.
The lectures (in English, German or Russian) will be published in full extent in a separate number
of the Numizmatika journal in course of 2006. The abstracts (in the original language of
communication, in English and Slovak) will be given to the participants at presentation. For

Le mus•e Dobr•e vient de mettre en ligne son importante collection de sigillographie moderne
(18e et 19e si‚cles pour l'essentiel) forte de 2 112 empreintes de sceaux.
Cet ensemble r•pertorie les blasons d'environ 2 700 familles nobles, le plus souvent de l'ouest de

Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum Brussels
The Brussels Coin Cabinet shall soon start the publication of its Greek coins as volumes of the
Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum. The first volume (in the new format) shall be devoted to Asia
Minor and shall be written by Mrs. Isabelle Tassignon.
It will not include the Bar collection of bronze coins, recently acquired and to be published
separately, but republish the specimens belonging to the de Hirsch and du Chastel collections.
Griechische M„nzen in Winterthur, Band 3
Der dritte Band des Sammlungskatalogs der griechischen MŠnzen des MŠnzkabinetts und der
Antikensammlung der Stadt Winterthur ist in fortgeschrittener Bearbeitung. Das Werk, konzipiert
von Hansj‹rg Bloesch, dem langjŒhrigen Leiter des Winterthurer MŠnzkabinetts (1948–1982), der
auch die beiden beiden ersten BŒnde publizierte (Bd. 1, 1987 und Bd. 2, 1997), wird im dritten
Band die MŠnzen von Pamphylien bis Mauretanien in einem Text- und einem Tafelband (mit
Lichtdrucktafeln) vorlegen.
FŠr den Katalog sind Marguerite Spoerri Butcher und Kevin Butcher (beide Beirut), Haim Gitler
(Jerusalem) sowie Ulrich Werz und Benedikt ZŒch (Winterthur) verantwortlich. Da die fŠr Band 3
bereits vorbereiteten Tafeln mit dem Jahr 1976 abschliessen, wird in den Katalog ein Teil der
zahlreichen Neuerwerbungen von 1976–2005 integriert. Die Publikation ist fŠr 2007 vorgesehen.
PERSONALIA
Meshorer Prize to Michel Amandry
The Second Meshorer Prize has been awarded to Michel Amandry, Director of the Department of
Coins and Medals of the Biblioth‚que nationale de France in Paris. He will receive the Prize in
October in Jerusalem.
The Meshorer Prize was organized by friends of the late Prof. Ya'akov Meshorer who donated a
total amount of $ 50,000 for a fund which is kept in the Israel Museum. From the interest, each
three years the prize if given to an outstanding numismatic scholar (the first recipient of the prize

was Andrew Burnett). The prize is awarded in a ceremony at the Israel Museum and the receiver
of the prize is asked to give a lecture.

elected at the Royal Academy of Belgium (Classe des Lettres).
