PETER’S PRESIDENTIAL PONDERINGS
Regretably, the Ponderings of President Peter for this edition have been lost in the aether during
the Editor’s recent computer crash. And as our worthy President is sunning his toes overseas at the
moment with Sue we are unable to obtain another copy of his sage advice which would no doubt
reflect on the Twilight Run and two Wednesday runs that have all been well attended.
Please note the following in relation to forthcoming events:
10 MAY
The SHOW AND SHINE AT INNABURRA near Sutherland is on.
Contact Roland Clark for the meeting place for the drive to Sutherland.
We have been advised that there will be a bus available to take members to a
suitable lunch location and that our cars will be secure at the display.
17-18 MAY
Please note that the TEMORA WEEKEND has been postponed and will be
Re-scheduled for either September or October….stay tuned for details.
15 JUNE
CHRISTMAS IN JUNE LUNCH at Ranleigh House in Robertson.

Please contact Roland Clark ASAP to book your attendance. A deposit will be required.
13 JULY
Please note that the Brass Monkey Run has moved from the 6th to 13th July. Destination will
be the Bushranger Hotel at Collector for breakfast at 8:30am following departure from the
Crossroads Hotel, Casula at 6:00am. An overnight stay is being organized similar to last
years Mudgee stayover…..stay tuned for details.
SPORTING REPORT
By Lester Gough
Two events have been held since the last edition of Top Gear. Both passed without any members
competing. The second round in particular was under subscribed and those who did enter were able to
do very high numbers of laps representing very good value for their entry fee.
There has been a change of format for Supersprints run by the NSW Road Racing Club which form
the sporting part of the TSCC calendar. The standing start has been replaced with a flying start similar
to the CSCA Supersprint format.
The next round will be at Oran Park GP circuit on 25th May and will be a round of the State
Championship. Members are advised to get their entry in early for this round.
Any member wishing to compete, or just wishing to discuss competing or attending as a spectator
should feel free to contact me on 0411 117 370 or 9799 3209.

TWILIGHT RUN & DINNER
Saturday 29 March 2003 saw the Club's Social Calendar kick off in style with a twilight run to Woy
Woy and dinner at the renowned Fisherman's Wharf Restaurant.
Nine cars left the Old Toll Gates at Berowra at the prescribed time taking advantage of the last day of
daylight saving.
The THOROUGHBRED cars making an impressive convoy were Rolls Royce (Les & Roselee
Johnson), Aston Martin (Ricky & Lyn Johnson), BMW (Peter & Sue Smart), Triumph TR6 (Colin &
Maria Allerdice), Toyota Soarer (David & Barbara Muir), Chev. Corvette (Graeme & Nola Webster),
Jaguar E Type (Brian & Barbara Marshall), Lexus (Roland & Stephanie Clark), and the prototype
Mazda " E Type" of Vem & Wendy Kelly.
The Dixons and the Stephens joined the group at Woy Woy
To maintain the conversation between each vehicle's driver and navigator along the way a small 50
question classic car general knowledge quiz was set.
The winners were the Smarts with 32 correct answers ... one better than Les & Roselee Johnson and
Vern & Wendy Kelly.
Well done everyone!!
For those club members who didn't go, you can test your knowledge as we have reproduced the quiz
on the following pages.
The answers are on page 10.

Matters relating to the Historical Conditional Registration Scheme
Further to the delegates meeting on Monday 27 January 2003, 1 have been in contact with the RTA in
regard to several issues raised by members either as part of the meeting or afterwards. The following
may relate to specific clubs or cases; however, the answers are of importance to all of us and your
members should be informed ASAP.
Vehicles being issued with Historic Conditional Registration (HCRS) without ALL necessary
forms being presented. In particular the 1259 Club Authorization Form.
The RTA states that all registry offices have been issued with the manual and instructions to cover all
versions of Conditional Registration. Even if the particular office slips up during this transition period
the facts are that any vehicle not having a complete set of documents technically is not registered and
the driver is at risk of not being covered by insurance and a charge of driving an unregistered vehicle.
The particular case presented at the meeting has been referred to the RTA registry concerned to rectify
the mistake and all offices will receive a memo reminding them of the procedures. If you know of
other cases I suggest that someone warn the owner and correct the situation.
Vehicles on Club Runs being required to show proof of the run being genuine.
The RTA and the CMC agree that nothing has changed in this area from the old club plate scheme. We
have advised many times in the past that members should carry a copy of the club magazine or events
calendar in the vehicle to avoid being unable to answer police enquiries which they are legitimately
able to ask anyone using a vehicle displaying HCRS plates.
Clarification of obtaining permission for longer service runs from the Registrar.
Again the rules have not changed from the club plate scheme. The owner may take the vehicle out to a
service station or to check things are OK before a Club Run within a reasonable distance of the place
of garaging. This distance may vary from a city-based member to a country member well out of town.
However, commonsense will dictate the definition of reasonable distance and no one should think that
they can be smarter than the system as this has been tried before and was jumped on from a great
height. Remember that there are over 30,000 members of CMC Clubs out there and they have reported
and will continue to report unusual movements of vehicles to someone on the CMC committee who
will then follow it up with the Club concerned. If the vehicle has to travel a longer distance for repairs
or other legitimate reasons the owner must contact the Club registrar or another member of the
executive and seek permission. If this is granted then the Club must record the details in the
'daybook,' as the RTA refers to it, and the vehicle must only travel on that particular trip as recorded.
Transfer of HCRS to another person
The RTA advises that this is not possible at present but is due for consideration in what they refer to as
the Stage 2 Review.
Can HCRS plates be put on hold
Again this is not possible at the moment but will be reviewed in Stage 2. It should be noted that it
costs $20 to put plates on hold and a new set cost $30 so unless you are in love with the current ones it
may not be worth the hassle. This may change if the RTA releases the plates numbered below 20,000
and people have significant number plates.
9
Top Gear – April 2003
Clubs being without HRCS for up to three weeks
It seems that the one case in point was a large club which is no longer in the CMC and they did not
have the benefit of our "order form" which we sent to the RTA to warn them of where a large numbers
of plates would be required and when. The Registry in question did not have enough plates in stock
when the Club Registrar turned up just before Christmas and the club had to wait until the New Year
for a delivery. You will remember that I advised Registrars to check with their chosen Registry just
before they needed their bulk plates to ensure a supply was available.
The multiple entry of clubs on the 1259 form for HRCS
The CMC's understanding of this issue seems to differ from the CHMC (Bush Council). We have sent
our version to the RTA and have received their confirmation so we must assume it is correct. If an
applicant fills in one or more additional clubs in the three lines provided under the line for the Primary
Club (which is the Club that signs the bottom left corner of the 1259 form) then he or she can take
their vehicle on those additional clubs' events without necessarily notifying or obtaining permission
from the Primary Club. This is PROVIDED that the other nominated Club or Clubs are RTA approved
to issue HCRS to their members and the applicant is a financial member of those Clubs. None of these
additional Clubs has the right to give permission for special trips such as service, etc. as mentioned
above; only the Primary Club can do this! It is not OK to list Clubs which do not have HCRS or ones
which you might be joining this year. You are filling in a legal document. Do not speculate!
Most other items raised were not clearly RTA problems or in some cases third hand therefore I did not
raise them. However, if anyone can give me details of such things as cars with the green and white
"forklift truck" plates with C at the end, no roadworthy sign off by the Club, no pink slip, non RTA
approved clubs issuing 1259 forms, and vehicles outside of the guidelines I will take them up with the
RTA or the Club concerned if it is one of ours. HOWEVER, I must have facts and numbers, as I will
not act on rumour or speculation.
For those Clubs keenly interested in the Rally HCRS, I have been assured that the department holding
things up has been asked to respond urgently, as the original request goes back to 20 March 2002 and
hopefully we will see results soon.
1 hope these details assist you in continuing to control our HCRS for the privilege it is, and to stop
those who would treat it as "cheap rego".
Regards,
Terry Thompson

LUNCH AT WOY WOY
Wednesday, 19th March 2003
The usual meeting place when going north, the old toll gates at Berowra saw twelve very happy
souls. It was a glorious day, the sun was shining, everyone was happy (despite what had started
the day before in Iraq) the cars were spick and span, what more could you want for a Wednesday
run? The promise of an enjoyable day made the drive to Woy Woy on the old Pacific Highway a
treat.
The happy souls were:
Vic and Judy Andrews, minus the Volvo; Roland and Stephanie Clark in their yellow MG (the
first time it's had a run in ages); Vern and Wendy Kelly in the yellow E Type; Les and Roselee
Johnson chauffeured by Tony Johnson (without Sandra who was relaxing on Norfolk Island for a
week) in the Holden Statesman; Peter Smart without Sue (she was playing the finals of her tennis
competition) was accompanied in the BMW by future TSCC members, Paul and Jan Goddard.
The trip along the winding roads of the Pacific Highway were a joy, especially in an open car. The
group arrived at Woy Woy in good time. The boat had not arrived, so we sat on the balcony of
'The Boathouse Restaurant' awaiting it's arrival. It wasn't long and the ferry arrived. Boarding
was easy, and it didn't take us very long to get settled. We didn't have it to ourselves though. It
made three stops, each time picking up and letting off passengers.
It was very pleasant touring the tranquil waters. There were some quaint houses on the foreshore,
there were also some mansions there's no holding back development. The macho men spent most
of the ride outside, while the ladies were split some inside, some outside soaking up the sun and
feeling the breeze through their hair. The two hour ferry ride went very quickly it could have had
something to do with the champagne that flowed as soon as we boarded!
(Thanks Vern and Paul I think)
We arrived back at the jetty, stepped off and sat down to a two course luncheon at 'The Boathouse'
(aptly named). A good venue. Vern and Wendy on their reconnoitre the week before had
organised a set menu with internal choices. Most of us had the fish and chips you can't go past
that meal when near the water.
We were joined by friends of ours, Albert and Shirley Ralph (local Killcare residents). A few
more pleasant hours were whiled away, the conversation flowed, the laughter increased, a few
problems of the world were solved a very good day. A quick telephone call to Sue Smart, with
the good news that her tennis team was victorious on the day.
There was no call to Sandra on Norfolk wouldn't want to disrupt any walking/relaxing adventures.
Both these lady's presence was missed, maybe next time.
Thanks to the Kelly's for taking up Joan Johnson's recommendation and booking the ferry ride
and lunch at 'The Boathouse Restaurant'; a definite thoroughbred day.

Lucas (or the Prince of Darkness)
An, Aston Martin doesn't leak oil ............................. it marks it's territory.
Did you hear about the man whose Aston didn't leak oil? The factory took it back and worked on it
until it did.
Did you hear the one about the guy that peeked into an Aston and asked the owner "How can you tell
one- switch from another at night? They all look the. same. He replied. it does not matter which one
you use, nothing happens
The Lucas motto: "Get home before dark."
Lucas - Patent holder for the short circuit.
Lucas. - Inventor of the first intermittent wiper.
Lucas - Inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.
The three position Lucas headlight switch - Dim, Flicker and Off.
The Original Anti-Theft Device - Lucas Electrics.
“I have had a Lucas pacemaker for years and have never had any trou.……..”
If Lucas made guns, wars would not start
Back in the 70s, Lucas decided to diversify its product line and began manufacturing vacuum cleaners.
It was the only product they offered which did. not suck.
Q: Why do the British drink warm beer?
A: Because Lucas makes their refrigerators
Alexander Graham Bell invented the Telephone; Thomas Edison invented the Light Bulb; and Joseph
Lucas invented the Short Circuit.
Recommended procedure before taking on a repair of Lucas equipment: Check the position of the
