TEAM MS FITS ‘RISE ABOVE BARRIERS’
Dear Family and Friends:
As long as we can remember our mother has wanted to trek in the Nepal Himalaya. In
the late 1980’s we got our shots and we were going to Nepal. So, Pip’s idea of planning
is finding a place on the map and buying a ticket and that’s why we didn’t make it to
Nepal and ended up having a two-year working ‘holiday’ in New Zealand.
Unfortunately between then and now she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
and has been terrorizing Collingwood and Victoria in her power wheel chair! Finally
after a few years of idle threats and random planning (the apples do not fall far from
the tree), we are trekking to Everest Base Camp this November with our mother.
A TrailRider hike to the top of Mount Finlayson
with Team MS Fits, family and friends!!
To facilitate Pippa’s movement we will
be using a TrailRider. A TrailRider is a
combination of a wheelbarrow and
rickshaw with one wheel that can be
pushed and pulled at the same time
by ‘Sherpas’. We have assembled
‘Team MS Fits’ a group of fifteen
individuals that are committed to
trekking with Pippa; due to Pippa’s
level of physical disability she cannot
undertake their journey without their
support.
Pippa is inspired and
energized by the evolving eclectic
‘dream team’ of extraordinary, caring
and dedicated individuals. Thanks to
them, she feels as though she is waking
up to a new stage in her life where
once again she can soak up the sights
and smells of the glorious outdoors that
have been inaccessible to her for too
many years.
This adventure is being made possible through a newly incorporated society: Rise
Above Barriers Society. By researching, planning and executing a trekking journey in
the Nepal Himalaya for a person living with a disability, Rise Above Barriers Society
aspires to:
• Leave a blueprint of the journey to assist those who come next;
• Purchase a TrailRider to donate to Recreation Integration Victoria (RIV);
• Raise awareness about accessibility and MS;
• And motivate others living with disabilities to pursue similar outdoor adventures.
Having just completed a Master of Science Degree in Rural Planning and Development,
Kristina is spearheading the society and acting as the Nepal Project Coordinator. To
learn more about Rise Above Barriers Society and Team MS Fits’ journey to Everest Base
Camp, please visit www.riseabovebarriers.com.
As a legacy of our journey, Rise Above Barriers Society is purchasing a Black Diamond
model of the TrailRider through RIV. Team MS Fits is using the TrailRider this summer and
fall to practice for the upcoming adventure. These hikes throughout British Columbia’s
backcountry are essential to the team’s successful movement in the Himalayas this
November. The TrailRider will then be donated to RIV to enable children and adults
living with disabilities to experience wilderness, parks and vacation spots with their
friends and family members. Currently, this model of TrailRider is only available in
Vancouver, which is difficult to access by those living on Vancouver Island. For more
information about the Black Diamond model of the TrailRider, please visit
www.disabilityfoundation.org/bcmos/. Information about RIV and the services they
offer can be discovered at www.rivonline.org.
Family members and friends have approached us to assist with our journey to Everest
Base Camp. Contributions will first be used by Rise Above Barriers Society to purchase
the TrailRider. The funds will then go towards supporting Team MS Fits since the trek to
Everest Base Camp is a significant financial commitment for each member and Pippa
cannot complete the journey without them. Additional contributions will be donated to
a program administered by the Capital Region Chapter of the MS Society that is
important to Pippa as it allows people living with MS to purchase needed aids they
cannot afford.
If you are interested, contributions can be made to support the objectives of Rise
Above Barriers Society through Victoria Integration Society. Our goal is to raise $50,000.
All donations will qualify for tax receipts; Victoria Integration Society is a registered
charity with the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency under the Income Tax Act.
Cheques should be made payable to Victoria Integration Society re: Rise Above
Barriers and sent to Recreation Integration Victoria, 4135 Lambrick Way, Victoria, British
Columbia, Canada, V8N 5R3.
Thank you in advance for your support. Together we will reach new heights by Rising
Above Barriers! If you have any questions or comments, please do not hesitate to
contact Kristina.
