What’s New in the Knowledge Centre! Available for your reference R EP OR T S The Japanese Seafood Market 2015 By IntraFish Media AS, Norway With the world’s sixth largest EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zone), Japan had been the largest fishing nation for 17 years (19721988). After the total domestic landing hit a peak of 128 million metric tons in 1984, Japan’s catches have continuously declined to only 37.3 million metric tons in 2014. The country is expected to see a further decrease in wild catches due to the effects of overfishing and an ageing fishing workforce and vessels. This report gives an overview of the major trends affecting the Japanese seafood market, analysis of the key species, importing regions, volume and prices as well as the top 20 importers. ENews June 2016 Bringing SMEs onto the e-Commerce Highway International Trade Centre (ITC), 25 May 2016 This report is a starting point for public-private dialogue to address e-commerce bottlenecks, especially for small firms in developing countries. Small firms face policy challenges in four processes typical to all e-commerce. (a) Establishing online business, (b) International e-payment, (c) International delivery and (d) International aftersales. To improve competitiveness, challenges must be met within the firm, in the business environment and by governments. The report provides checklists for policy guidance, as well as case studies from e-commerce entrepreneurs in developing countries. Trade in Quinoa: Impact on the Welfare of Peruvian Communities International Trade Centre (ITC), 11 May 2016 Buying quinoa contributes to better livelihoods for rural Peruvian communities, according to a new ITC study. The study provides much-needed data on the impact of changing market prices on the welfare of rural households in the altiplano of Peru. The findings inform policymakers about the benefits of the trade and challenges still facing smallholders, following conflicting media reports on the impact of higher quinoa prices. Among the Aid-for-Trade policy recommendations are incentives for better storage facilities, establishment of markets for ecosystem services and support for market differentiation strategies for biodiverse, organic quinoa produced by smallholders. ENews June 2016 Egypt: Company Perspectives – An ITC Series on Non-Tariff Measures International Trade Centre (ITC), 10 May 2016 Egypt has much to gain from increased transparency of regulations, procedures, and better-defined rules of origin, according to the ITC survey on non-tariff measures in 2011. Nearly 40% of surveyed companies in Egypt are affected by regulatory and procedural trade obstacles. Agri-food exporters struggle with strict tolerance limits in Europe and labelling requirements in Arab States. Rules of origin and certification stand out as challenges for manufacturing exporters; administrative and infrastructural challenges increase compliance difficulties. For importers, conformity assessments, charges and taxes top the list of challenges. The results underline the need to better implement existing trade agreements for competitiveness and regional integration.
