Workshops for Women Who have Lived in Situations of Intimate
Partner Violence
June 19-21, 2012, Fredericton (English)
The New Brunswick Association of Social Workers (NBASW) and the Muriel
McQueen Fergusson Centre (MMFC) will be offering a three day workshop
to women survivors of intimate partner violence (IPV) as part of their project,
Action for Change: Empowering women victims of intimate partner violence to
build healthier and safer lives. There is no registration fee and participants’ travel
expenses and other related expenses (such as babysitting) will be compensated.
This project has two objectives: An evaluative study and information sessions
for survivors of intimate partner violence. The workshops include topics on: how
to define and understand IPV; how to build and maintain healthy self-esteem;
how to develop governance skills; how to perform an evaluation of a project; and
how to become a leader in your life and in your community. After the workshop,
participants will be asked to volunteer to be part of an individual interview to
help evaluate the effectiveness of the Train-the-Trainer training program that New
Brunswick Social Workers previously received, “Understanding the Impact of Intimate
Partner Violence: Helping Social Workers to Better Intervene.” Participants will be
asked to give their opinion on the importance of such a training program. Do they
believe that this type of training is helpful? Do they see gaps in the training material?

New Initiative
Cell Phone Collection – The MMFC is starting to collect
previously used cell phones to give to women in transition
houses who currently do not have a cell phone. This initiative
will give women who have left abusive relationships more
confidence as they will know that help is only a phone call
away, if they need it. Digital cell phones will call 911, even
if the phone is not connected to a cell plan. Help us support
the transition houses by giving your old cell phone new life.
Previously used digital cell phones can be dropped off at the
MMFC. (Please no analog phones as this system is no longer
operational.)
