Independence Day - 4th of July
C’est la fête nationale des Etats-Unis.
Elle commémore la Déclaration d’Indépendance du 4 juillet 1776, vis-à-vis du Royaume de GrandeBretagne.
Les commémorations
Le 4 juillet est un jour férié national.
Les décorations utilisées reprennent les couleurs du drapeau américain, soit le bleu, le blanc et le rouge.
C’est un temps de réunion en famille, voire entre voisins.
Durant la journée, il y a de nombreuses parades regroupant des militaires, des pompiers, des associations,
des clubs de sports, ...
Le soir, des feux d’artifices (fireworks) sont tirés dans tous les Etats-Unis par des particuliers mais aussi
par les municipalités.
On peut entendre l’hymne national : « The star spangled banner » ainsi que d’autres chansons en
l’honneur des Etats-Unis : « God bless America », « America the beautiful ».
Histoire du drapeau américain
Il est surnommé : « stars and stripes » (littéralement : étoiles et bandes)
La version actuelle date du 4 juillet 1960. Elle possède 50 étoiles, représentant les 50 états des Etats-
Unis. Le dernier état ajouté au drapeau : Hawaï.
Les 13 bandes représentent les 13 États fondateurs qui se sont unis pour former les États Unis
d’Amérique ; et, initialement il n’y avait que 13 étoiles.
Chaque fois qu’un état a rejoint l’Union, une étoile a été rajoutée.

« The star spangled banner » est un poème écrit par Francis Scott Key en 1814.

Oh ! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation !
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
