Main current fields of research interests
* Applications of multilevel models to non-natural groupings (e.g. groups of individuals to which the same mix of legal or
conventional rules apply, by contrast with natural groups like schools, firms, regions, etc.)
* Evaluation of the effects of policies against poverty (in a domestic perspective and through international comparisons) and of
the effects of family and labour policies, especially on European young adults (analyses based on the ECHP and SILC datasets)
Current professional activities
* Professor (Economics) at the University of Nancy (since 1975) as a result of the national competition Concours externe
d‟agrégation de sciences économiques (rank: 7 out of 32)
* Courses taught: mainly applied statistics and econometrics, with applications to family economics and to law & economics (at
Bachelor, Master and Doctorate levels) : data analysis techniques, introductory course to econometrics, advanced tools for
descriptive statistics with SAS, datasets management, applied multiple regression, logit and discrete choice models, duration
models, multilevel models.
* Supervising Ph.D. theses (22 doctoral students, among which 21 completed their thesis and got their diploma. And currently
supervisor of one Ph.D. these) and a lot of dissertations at Master level (Nancy and Impalla-Ceps/Leuven) as well
* Member of a Strasbourg-Nancy research team (BETA, UMR UdS-CNRS N°7522)
* Research associate at CEPS/INSTEAD (research projects on Transitional labour markets, on Poverty dynamics and on
Commuters wages)
* Collaborating, on some topics, with the Nancy University Observatoire de la Vie étudiante et de l‟insertion professionnelle
(research in progress about the success factors in Law studies and the reasons explaining why candidates fail to appear)
Main previous activities
* In charge of the launching and monitoring of the Panel de Ménages lorrains (a 2200 households regional panel, six annual
waves 1985-90), in close cooperation with the local branch of the INSEE (the french National Institute of Statistics). This
regional panel held the role of a pilot project preliminary to the participation of France to the European Community
Household Panel (ECHP). It also served as a basis for close Luxembourg/Lorraine comparisons, owing to the fact that this
Lorrainese panel was designed in common with the PSELL, to ensure a high level of comparability.
* Closely associated (1986-90) to the design and working phases of the national INSEE survey « Conditions de vie » (16000
households, with special attention devoted to the disadvantaged fraction of the population).
* Partner (France) of the PACO Project (CEPS/INSTEAD, Luxembourg), oriented towards the creation of a unique database
ensuring high comparability between various national household panels (PSID, German SOeP, PSELL for Luxembourg,
British BHPS, Hungarian panel, etc.).
* Launching (1978) of LASARE, a laboratory for collective research in applied economics at Nancy University, later
transformed into ADEPS (a multi-disciplinary research team specialized in longitudinal data collection and analysis).
* Director of the research team “Emploi et politiques sociales”, URA CNRS N°1167 (merging of ADEPS and GREE teams) in
the „90s, during 4 years
* Courses taught: monetary economics, social policies, distribution of income analysis, great economic problems, time-series
analysis and forecasting techniques, short-term economic perspectives analysis, hazard models, family economics
