The Verdon - Accueil
For 500 000 years, Man has marked this territory by his presence. The
architectural remains, art, tradition, and rural heritage which fashioned
the habitat and the lands, show his trace and make up an essential part
of the Verdon’s cultural heritage.

An fragile territory
An open book on geology, wildlife and the history of Mankind,
the Verdon region is an land of discovery. Straddling the Alpes de
Haute-Provence and Var departments (marked by the meeting of two
climates: Alpine and Mediterranean) it offers a variety of landscapes:
mountains, forests, farming plains and plateaux, lakes and cliffs.
The Verdon, with its 165 km and 434 million m3 held by 5 dams,
supplies the big cities of Provence with drinking water.
For nearly 500 000 years, Man has marked this territory. The architectural
remains, art, tradition, and rural heritage which fashioned the habitat
and the lands, make up the cultural heritage of the Verdon.

Region and know-how
Present in the area for close to 500 000 years, the inhabitants of the
Verdon have developed a know-how which is strongly linked to the
resources of the territory. Carried out in the family, these crafts were
varied: wood or stone work, tanning, basket weaving, processing of
products from gathering or farming, etc.

The Verdon natural regional park
A natural regional Park is a territory whose remarkable natural and
cultural heritage justifies recognition at a national level. It is approved
as a natural regional Park from the moment its representatives commit
to a project which combines development and preservation of the
heritage. Born in 1997, the Verdon natural regional Park covers 46
communes, two departments (Alpes de Haute-Provence and Var) as
well as the Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur Region.

Discovering the Var regions
Here, Tourism has another story to tell
Discovering fine crafts in the Var
A cross on the mountain, a hut hidden in the shadow of a slope, a
fountain on the square of a village testify the territory maintains links
with those who have lived or are still living here. This old or recent
history also tells the birth and transformation of the landscape. Proof
is made that in these places, man and nature have made a successful
marriage of reason over the years. Acting for responsible tourism, is
before all being aware of these links, showing them respect and value
through a thoughtful tourist offer.

Useful Guiding books
Whether for fishing, hiking, mountain-biking, climbing, canyoning or
horse-trekking, each activity has its guides and its books. The Agence
de Développement Touristique of the Alpes de Haute-Provence
provides booklets. The Verdon natural regional Park has published a
number of guide-books : « Sur les chemins du Verdon à pied, à VTT,
à cheval » or « Balades nature dans le Parc naturel régional du
Verdon » (On foot, by mountain-bike, on horseback on the Verdon
trails). La Grande Traversée VTT La TransVerdon by VTopo. The
Fédération Française de Randonnée topoguides are particularly useful.
Maps
Whatever the case, it is not a good idea to set off into the wilderness,
on such a complex territory, without knowing where you are. A precise
map (scale 1: 25 000) is indispensable for your safety.
