COLLOQUE « RITES ET SANTÉ »
Une initiative de la Chaire Religion, spiritualité et santé
Le champ de la santé, par la pluralité des dynamismes qui l’animent, forme un espace
particulièrement propice à la composition et recomposition de ritualités de toutes sortes.
La maladie représentant, pour l’humain, l’irruption d’une étrangeté qui vient briser l’ordre
des choses, elle force du même coup la conscience à considérer la fragilité de la vie et
l’inéluctable de la mort. Liturgies d’inspiration religieuse ou séculière, rituels de guérison
ou d’accompagnement de la maladie, rites de survie ou de rétablissement, en marge
de la rationalité biomédicale ou intégrés à ses procédures, forment un ensemble
désormais
pluriel
et
bigarré
de
pratiques
mal
connues.
Sans séparer ici a priori les ritualités héritées des traditions religieuses de celles qui sont
inventées dans un esprit séculier, et sans prétendre épuiser la question, nous pouvons
déjà suggérer plusieurs fonctions rituelles observables dans les sociétés contemporaines,
en rapport avec la quête de santé :
1. rétablir un équilibre relationnel entre le sujet traumatisé par l’expérience de la maladie
(qu’il en soit l’objet ou le témoin chez d’autres) et les configurations de sens disponibles
dans la société;
2. jeter des ponts pour surmonter l’angoisse vécue dans les ruptures que suppose la
maladie (et a fortiori la mort), en cherchant à rendre habitables la finitude et la fragilité;
3. suggérer, sinon expérimenter, des processus de solidarité face au destin, entre les
personnes touchées par la maladie et par rapport à la condition humaine elle-même.
L’objectif du colloque, dans cette perspective, est d’explorer les multiples facettes de la
réalité contemporaine des rituels dans leurs rapports au champ de la santé dans ses
multiples extensions, non seulement là où il se constitue de pratiques sanitaires reconnues
(préventives, curatives ou adaptatives), mais dans la multiplicité de ses mises en scène
sociales, par exemple dans la littérature, le cinéma, les médias, les célébrations de
masse, les rituels de désintoxication, les rites de passage festifs, les pèlerinages, etc. On
espère ainsi dégager un certain nombre d’éléments observables en vue d’appuyer une
théorisation originale de ces pratiques et de leurs rapports à la quête de santé, pour
aujourd’hui.

MODERNITÉ ET RELIGION AU QUÉBEC
Explorations heuristiques à partir de l’œuvre de Marcel Gauchet
Le groupe de recherche multidisciplinaire « Modernité et religion au Québec » poursuit
depuis plusieurs années une analyse approfondie de l’œuvre de Marcel Gauchet. Au
cours des trois précédents colloques de l’ACFAS, nous nous sommes attachés à dégager
la généalogie, l’économie interne et la réception de sa thèse fondamentale de la
modernité occidentale comme sortie de la religion. Le chemin parcouru nous autorise à
nous tourner désormais vers le second objectif de notre programme de recherche, en

interrogeant cette fois la valeur heuristique des thèses de Gauchet pour éclairer
l’évolution
de
la
société
québécoise
depuis
la
Révolution
tranquille.
Les débats des dernières années sur la modernité québécoise auront permis
d’indéniables avancées. Ainsi s’accorde-t-on aujourd’hui à reconnaître le rôle qu’a joué
l’éloignement du catholicisme dans la constitution de l’identité québécoise moderne.
On admet également l’importance de la colère antireligieuse chez plusieurs acteurs de
la scène intellectuelle et sociale à partir des années soixante. Mais la réflexion sur le sens
et la portée de ces phénomènes se trouve encore trop souvent court-circuitée par l’idée
que la société québécoise a tout simplement vécu un processus de sécularisation
identique à celui qu’ont connu les autres sociétés occidentales. L’exception religieuse
canadienne française et sa transformation ultérieure semblent dès lors entièrement
transparentes : après une longue parenthèse attribuable au contexte historique et
politique, le Québec aurait retrouvé la route du progrès qui a conduit l’homme
occidental de l’obscurantisme aux lumières. Il importe toutefois de se demander si cette
transposition sans nuance d’une philosophie générale de l’histoire, d’ailleurs rarement
reconnue ou assumée comme telle, n’occulte pas des aspects décisifs de la dynamique
et
du
sens
de
la
modernité
québécoise.
Quelles que soient les réserves qu’elle puisse appeler par ailleurs, l’œuvre de Gauchet
nous paraît constituer une ressource majeure pour dépasser cette occultation. En
attribuant au religieux un rôle de structuration millénaire de l’être ensemble, Gauchet a
été en effet conduit à ouvrir sa problématique de la sortie de la religion à un
questionnement politique et anthropologique fondamental sur le lien social dans les
sociétés post-religieuses. Ses distinctions entre les phases successives et les infinies
médiations que comporte la sortie de la religion fournissent par ailleurs un cadre général
pour l’analyse des différentes modalités de cette sortie selon les sociétés. Les
contributions de cette année auront donc pour objectif de confronter l’apport théorique
de Gauchet à la réalité spécifique de la modernité québécoise.

IDENTITÉ ET CONSCIENCE ETHNIQUES : LE RÔLE DE LA RELIGION
Un colloque organisé par le Groupe de recherche interdisciplinaire sur le Montréal
ethnoreligieux (GRIMER) Université du Québec à Montréal
Parrainé conjointement par l’Association professionnelle des géographes du Québec
(APGQ) et la Société québécoise pour l’étude de la religion (SQER)
En raison d’un amalgame de facteurs dont, notamment, le phénomène de
mondialisation économique et culturelle, la plupart des États occidentaux ont connu,
depuis le début des années 1970 environ, une transformation ethnoculturelle sans
précédent de leurs populations respectives. Or, sur le plan de la recherche cette
hétérogénéisation ou recomposition démographique a provoqué un essor phénoménal,
voire un renouvellement quasi total du champ des études ethniques et interethniques. Si,
toutefois, les travaux contemporains ont réussi à éclairer bien des aspects de ce
processus associé fréquemment à l’immigration « tiers-mondiste » et aux multiples lois et
politiques qui ont été adoptées pour gérer sinon promouvoir le pluralisme ethnoculturel,
force est d’admettre que l’appartenance religieuse est demeurée, jusqu’à tout
récemment, un élément largement ignoré, et peut-être même boudé par des
chercheurs qui, convaincus possiblement de l’irréversibilité du phénomène de laïcisation,
ont eu tendance à doter le facteur religieux d’une qualité « anachronique ». Quoi qu’il
en soit, une recension des études ethniques réalisées au Canada depuis 1960 a
démontré, par exemple, qu’à peine 6,5 % des ouvrages parus abordent de prés ou de
loin la dimension religieuse (GRIMER, 2000). Et pourtant ! Selon un sondage effectué en
2004 au compte de l’Association des études canadiennes, la diversité religieuse est
désormais perçue, tant au Québec qu’à l’échelle du Canada, comme la principale
source potentielle de tensions sociales. Ainsi, 43 % des répondants québécois croient que
les différences confessionnelles risquent d’engendrer des conflits dans les années à
venir ; par contraste, seulement 14 % craignent les différends francophonesanglophones, 13 % les rapports entre Autochtones et non-Autochtones, et 6 % les
relations entre Blancs et non-Blancs. Pour la première fois dans l’histoire du Québec
contemporain, la religion a donc supplanté la langue, l’origine ethnique et la « race »
comme la cause de perturbations sociales la plus redoutée du grand public. Pour
déconstruire cette image primaire issue des stéréotypes médiatiques et qui impose un
théâtre social conflictuel tant chez ceux qui forment la société d’accueil que chez les
citoyens d’arrivée récente, un nouveau champ de recherche vient de s’ouvrir. Aussi estce l’objectif premier de ce colloque interdisciplinaire de cerner la fonction de
l’appartenance religieuse dans l’élaboration de ce que le sociologue Albert Bastenier
appelle « l’identité » et la « conscience ethniques » au sein de nos sociétés. Après une
séance d’ouverture portant sur ces deux notions de base, la rencontre donnera lieu à
des communications qui, pour fins de comparaison, aborderont les diverses
manifestations et les rôles variables de la religion au sein de différentes minorités
ethnoreligieuses établies à Montréal ainsi qu’à l’extérieur du Québec. Il y a aura
également des interventions sur des thèmes comme « Femmes et religion »,
« Adolescents et religion » et les conflits liés à l’érection ou au réaménagement des lieux

de culte minoritaires. Le colloque se terminera avec une excursion axée sur les
transformations récentes du paysage ethnoconfessionnel du Grand Montréal.
