THE MONEY TRAIN.
On the night of August 7th 1963, a mail train left Glasgow for London. On
the train were letters and also lots of money for London banks. At 3 a.m., 16
robbers stopped the train and stole £ 2,600,000. Next morning, everyone was
talking about the most daring* British crime in history : The Great Train
Robbery.
The criminals injured the train driver, terrified the Post Office workers on
the train and stole the money (the equivalent of 29 million pounds today). They
thought that it was the perfect crime but they made one major mistake. They told
the workers ‘Don’t move for half an hour’.
The police immediately started searching isolated houses in the region
because they were sure the criminals were less than 30 minutes away by car.
They were right. The robbers heard about the police action on the radio and
escaped, although each man had to carry £ 150,000 in cash. They didn’t have
time to clean the house where they were hiding and they left important clues.
(…) The police found the mail bags from the train and some money in the
robbers’ hideout. The 16 men were all professional criminals, so the police knew
their fingerprints. Although the robbers liked extravagant lives, they had to hide
and couldn’t spend their new fortunes. One by one they made mistakes. By
January1964, the police had nine of the train robbers in Prison.
Seven robbers had never been arrested, and two escaped from prison.
They left the country, but after a year or two, when they had no more money, or
wanted to see their families, they returned to England. They couldn’t work, and
no criminals would associate with them. They finally went to the police and
went to prison. All except one…
