Every February we get together with our sister restaurants and celebrate our love for wine. We do this by showcasing the quirky and outstanding value wines on our respective lists. This year we have combined our “Love Wine” with Film. We are aiming to showcase the parallels between the wine and film industries. Wine is growing in popularity in America. So much so that in each the last two years Americans purchased more wine than the French (Sacré bleu!). Like anything in America, if it becomes popular it gets the green light for the silver screen! There have been a number of high profile wine related films in the last few years. Many of which take place or showcase the fantastic wines of California. Everyone has seen Sideways, the movie that skyrocketed Paul Giamatti’s Career while at the same time tanking Merlot sales world wide. Then came Bottle shock, starring Captain Kirk and Severus Snape (also known as Chris Pine and Alan Rickman) that tells the story of how Chateau Montelena, one of the legendary wineries of Napa Valley broke through onto the world stage while narrowly avoiding bankruptcy. A host of others followed (or sparsely premiered in between) that you may not be as familiar with. Corked, From Ground to Glass, Red Obsession, and Mondovino are all highly recommended for the avid oenophile. Now getting on to what we are doing here at Avenue to celebrate this culmination of industries... We have decided to showcase the wines of Francis Ford Coppola. Yes, the man behind the Godfather has his own winery. And as expected it’s in California’s Napa Valley. What you might not expect is how delicious these wines are across the range. On February 18th we are having a very exciting tasting of these jems in our private dinning room. Julian Seabrook of Seabrook Wines will be leading the tasting and talking about the wines, winery and director himself. If you cant make the tasting we have an offer you cant refuse: the 2013 Diamond Collection Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc have been put on by the glass for the duration of the month! No grapes suitable for winemaking could be planted in the 13 British colonies. This lead to a dependence on European wines. Unfortunately much of that wine shipped to the new world arrived spoiled and heavily taxed. It is the unique production and impervious nature of Madeira that leant itself to the popularization of this delicious wine among the Aristocrats in America. Madeira is a fortified wine that is exposed to high temperatures and oxygen over a long period of time. Constant heating and cooling in oak barrels builds complexity that will last decades and often even centuries. This meant that Madeira was one of the safest wines to import to the new world. Demand grew and Madeira became so highly respected it was used to toast The Declaration of Independence. It was Thomas Jefferson who was probably the biggest advocate of Madeira but it is well documented that Benjamin Franklin and George Washington were also big fans. The flavour of Madeira has not changed in 300 years and quality has never been better. These wines are among the most underrated wines in the world. They offer so much complexity and enjoyment. Now is your chance to see what the early Americans were onto. 100ml Glass Verdelho is one of the drier grape varieties grown in Madeira. This one is medium dry with a richness of orange peel and exotic fruits. This is a perfect accompaniment for richer soups or game. Terrantez is a extremely rare grape variety and these grapes are almost always reserved for a vintage wine. This wine however was made in limited quantity to mark the bi-centenary of Blandy’s Madeira house. This wine is medium rich with lots of dried fruits, wood and spice. Sercial makes the driest form of Madeira. This is marked with bright acidity and a freshness that only Sercial can bring. Almond skin, pencil shavings, caramel and orange rind flavours are found here in perfect balance. Bual is the longest living of the Madeira grapes. This wine shows us why with notes of dried apricots, lime zest, sugar cane, tobacco and vanilla fudge. All elegantly put together in a medium rich style. 13 Sweet Wines 100ml Glass Bottle Château Petit Vedrines, 2011.
