Governments of Canada and British Columbia reach funding agreement to replace North Fork
Bridge

MALAKWA ʹCanadians, tourists and shipping companies benefit from safe, well-maintained
highways and roads. From visiting friends and relatives to getting goods to market, we rely on
our highways to support a vibrant and sustainable economy and quality of life, but also to
support a thriving tourism industry.
Together, the federal and provincial governments are investing approximately $38 million to
build a new 4-lane bridge and expand a 3.8 kilometre section of Trans-Canada Highway to 4lanes, to ensure a reliable, safe connection on Highway 1 between Sicamous and Revelstoke.
This section of the Trans-Canada Highway is the primary east-west corridor for goods
movement, links communities such as Salmon Arm, Sicamous and Revelstoke, and has heavy
tourist traffic in the summer months. These upgrades to the bridge and highway will allow
motorists a safe opportunity to pass, which will improve traffic flow and reduce travel times.
Work is anticipated to begin summer 2016 and be completed by fall 2018.
The North Fork Bridge, constructed in 1958, over the Perry River is located 40 kilometres west
of Revelstoke, has 2 narrow lanes, low clearance, no shoulders and is nearing the end of its
service life. It will be replaced with a new, modern, 4-lane structure. Highway 1 will be widened
to four lanes with 2.5-metre-wide paved shoulders and rumble strips, and divided with a
median barrier along 3.5 kilometres. As well, access on and off the highway will be improved
with 1.6 kilometres of new frontage roads and two new protected T-intersections.
The Government of Canada is contributing up to $12,807,407 to this project through the
Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component ʹNational and Regional Projects (PTIC-NRP).
The Province of British Columbia is providing the remaining funding of $25,160,018. The total
estimated cost of the project is $37,967,425.

Les gouvernements du Canada et de la Colombie-Britannique concluent une entente de
financement pour le remplacement du pont North Fork
MALAKWA ʹLes Canadiens, les touristes et les entreprises de transport profitent des routes et
des autoroutes sécuritaires et bien entretenues. Qu͛il s͛agisse de rendre visite aux amis et à la
famille ou d͛assurer le transport des biens vers les marchés, nous nous fions tous à nos routes
pour appuyer notre économie dynamique et durable et notre qualité de vie, mais également
pour soutenir notre industrie touristique prospère.
Ensemble, les gouvernements fédéral et provincial investissent environ 38 millions de dollars
pour la construction d͛un nouveau pont à quatre voies et pour le prolongement à quatre voies
sur une section de 3,8 kilomètres de la route transcanadienne, afin d͛assurer des déplacements
fiables et sécuritaires sur la route 1 entre Sicamous et Revelstoke.
Cette section de la route transcanadienne constitue le principal corridor est-ouest pour le
transport des biens, en plus de relier des collectivités telles que Salmon Arm, Sicamous et
Revelstoke. De plus, cette partie de la route est fréquentée par un très grand nombre de
touristes chaque été. Les améliorations apportées au pont et à la route permettront d͛accroître
la sécurité des dépassements, dans l͛intérêt des automobilistes, ce qui améliorera la circulation
routière tout en réduisant la durée des déplacements. Les travaux devraient commencer au
cours de l͛été 2016 et prendre fin d͛ici l͛automne 2018.
Le pont North Fork, construit en 1958 au-dessus de la rivière Perry, est situé à 40 kilomètres à
l͛ouest de Revelstoke. Il s͛agit d͛un pont à deux voies étroites, son dégagement en hauteur est
faible et il n͛a pas d͛accotement. De plus, le pont arrivera bientôt à la fin de sa vie utile. Il sera
remplacé par une nouvelle structure moderne à quatre voies. La route 1 sera élargie et passera
à quatre voies, avec des accotements pavés de 2,5 mètres et des bandes rugueuses. De plus, la
route sera divisée par une barrière médiane sur une distance de 3,5 kilomètres. Enfin, on
améliorera les entrées et les sorties de la route en aménageant de nouvelles chaussées
latérales sur 1,6 kilomètre et deux nouvelles intersections en T protégées.
Le gouvernement du Canada verse une contribution maximale de 12 807 407 $ dans le cadre de
ce projet aux termes des Projets nationaux et régionaux du volet Infrastructures provincialesterritoriales (PNR-VIPT). La province de la Colombie-Britannique fournit le reste des fonds de 25
160 018 $. Le coût total estimé du projet est de 37 967 425 $.
