Trans-Canada Highway getting safety improvements near Malahat

VICTORIA ʹThe Trans-Canada Highway is the main north-south corridor on Vancouver Island
and serves as a critical route for moving goods, linking communities, and supporting a thriving
tourism industry in the region.
The governments of Canada and British Columbia today announced approximately $34 million
in funding to upgrade five kilometres of the Trans-Canada highway where it passes through
Malahat Village. The project will contribute to a safer and more reliable connection between
Victoria and Duncan. It will also benefit the surrounding communities by stimulating economic
development opportunities for the middle class and those trying to join it.
The safety improvements include expanding five kilometres of highway to four lanes with wider
shoulders, installing three kilometres of median barrier, and providing improved and safer
highway access through a frontage road system. Work is anticipated to begin in early 2017 and
be completed in 2018. When the Malahat Village upgrade is finished, there will be an 11kilometre-long section of highway with median barrier.
The Government of Canada is contributing up to $14 million to this project through the New
Building Canada Fund Provincial-Territorial Infrastructure Component ʹNational and Regional
Projects. The Province of British Columbia is providing approximately $20 million and is
responsible for any additional costs. The total estimated cost of the project is $34 million.

Amélioration de la sécurité sur la route transcanadienne près de Malahat, en ColombieBritannique
VICTORIA ʹLa route transcanadienne, principal corridor nord-sud sur l͛île de Vancouver, joue
un rôle essentiel dans le transport des marchandises, ainsi que pour établir un lien entre les
collectivités et appuyer l͛industrie touristique prospère dans la région.
Les gouvernements du Canada et de la Colombie-Britannique ont annoncé aujourd͛hui un
financement d͛environ 34 millions de dollars pour l͛amélioration de la route transcanadienne
sur cinq kilomètres dans le village de Malahat. Le projet contribuera à établir un lien plus
sécuritaire et plus fiable entre Victoria et Duncan. De plus, le projet profitera aux collectivités
des environs en favorisant les possibilités de développement économique pour la classe
moyenne et pour ceux qui travaillent fort pour s͛y joindre.
Les améliorations de la sécurité comprennent le prolongement des quatre voies de l͛autoroute
sur cinq kilomètres, ainsi que l͛ajout d͛accotements plus larges, l͛installation d͛une glissière
médiane sur trois kilomètres, et la mise en place d͛un accès amélioré, plus sécuritaire, grâce à
l͛aménagement d͛un réseau routier de desserte. Les travaux devraient commencer au début de
2017 et prendre fin en 2018. Une fois qu͛on aura terminé les travaux d͛amélioration dans le
village de Malahat, on aura accès à une section de 11 kilomètres de la route qui sera dotée
d͛une glissière médiane.
Le gouvernement du Canada verse une contribution pouvant atteindre 14 millions de dollars
pour ce projet, aux termes des Projets nationaux et régionaux du volet Infrastructures
provinciales-territoriales du Nouveau Fonds Chantiers Canada. La province de la ColombieBritannique verse environ 20 millions de dollars et doit couvrir les coûts additionnels. Le coût
total du projet est estimé à 34 millions de dollars.
