It takes place during the 1st week after your arrival. Make sure to register for it on your application form. For more information, see: http://www.dauphine.fr/en/international-office/coming-to-dauphine-for-exchange-student/courses-offered-schedules-and-calendars/flefrancais-langue-etrangere.html#c96302 BU Paris will pay the fee for this seminar, which is due to Dauphine on January 7th or January 8th. when arriving in Paris, ask the Director, Renée Pontbriand, to give you a check for this fee. Deadlines: • • Online application on Dauphine site: before October 31st Sending the printed version to Dauphine: before November 15th (allow 7 days for the letter to arrive in France) 1 COURSE CHOICES: BOSTON UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS For this program, you need to complete 4 courses, each counting for 4 credits, for a total of 16 credits: • 1 internship course (monitored by BU Paris faculty): CAS EC 497 Internship in Business/Economics Abroad • 3 courses at Paris Dauphine Important: Please make sure, when choosing your four courses, that they are approved by BU SMG department (Faith Nussbaum or your academic advisor). Requirements for your 3 Dauphine courses: - Track I: 1 French Language course + 2 Management courses in English Track II : 1 Liberal Art course in French + 2 Management courses (preferably at least 1 in French) In order for each course to count for 4 credits, make sure you take courses that are scheduled for at least 39 hours per semester or 6-7.5 Dauphine ECTS. Please, consult in advance with the SMG department, in order to determine a list of pre-approved courses from the Dauphine website, and try to make a list containing one or two alternative courses, in cases of conflict. DAUPHINE’S ACADEMIC PRE-REGISTRATION: THE “LEARNING AGREEMENT” The Learning Agreement consists of pre-registering online for the courses you would like to take at Dauphine during your semester in Paris. You can do this between November 1st and December 15th at the following link: http://www.dauphine.fr/en/international-office/coming-to-dauphine-for-exchange-student/learning-agreement.html This Learning Agreement can be modified online before you arrive or even once the classes have started. Around one month after the start of the semester, you will sign a definitive Learning Agreement with your Dauphine Academic Advisor, and will no longer be able to make course changes. A few tips: • Create your Learning Agreement as early as possible to avoid problems with courses being “full”; • Pre-register for more courses that you need to take to anticipate conflicts, if the course schedule is not yet available or if courses are marked as “full”; • Be aware that your registration is definitive only once you are in Paris: changes can be made; • If a course you really need to take is marked as “full” online, don’t panic. Chances are some other students pre-registered for it only as an alternative and won’t actually take it. There might be room for you. Just attend the 1st class and ask the professor whether he or she will accept you; which they generally do. A FTER YOUR ARRIVAL : GETTING STARTED AT BU P ARIS AND THE U NIVERSITÉ DE P ARIS IX D AUPHINE BU PARIS ORIENTATION During your first week, you will meet with Boston University Paris staff for orientation: • General information and housing (with Renée Pontbriand and Isabelle Brière) • Academics (with Emmanuelle Farhi) • Internship (with EUSA) NB: dates and hours will depend on your schedule at Dauphine. 2 FIRST TWO WEEKS IN DAUPHINE The first two weeks at Dauphine are intense. You will brush up your language skills and take a language exam to determine which courses in French you can take. You will finalize your course choice by consulting with your academic advisor at Dauphine and by attending your first classes. You will get introduced to Dauphine and its set-up. • • • • Language placement exam for intensive seminar: Monday, January 6th (to be confirmed) French intensive seminar: Tuesday, January 7th to Saturday, January 11th – 4 hours a day Welcome session: Wednesday, January 15th Language test: Thursday, January 16th (to be confirmed) During the first week, you will meet with your Academic Advisor to determine with her your final choice of courses for the semester. Again, it is important that you attend the 1st class of any course you wish to take, in order to make sure you are accepted in it. If ever the 1st session for one of your courses takes place at the same time as one of your French intensive seminar class, give the priority to the semester course you chose, rather than to the language class. This rarely happens, but if it does, be assured that language professors know about this and won’t penalize you for it. Buddy Program: a few weeks before your arrival, you might receive an email from Dauphine, asking you to participate in a “Buddy Program”. This means that you can have a French Dauphine student guide you. Please, do not neglect this great opportunity! INTERNSHIP: PLACEMENT, HOURS AND ACADEMIC WORK The internship component has 2 aspects: • the work experience (supervised by EUSA) • the academic work (supervised by BU Paris faculty Hanadi Sobh) Work experience: During your first week, you will meet with EUSA, in order to prepare for your internship. EUSA will then find the most suitable internship. You are supposed to work part-time (2.5 days a week) from mid-February to mid-May. In order to determine your internship hours, you have to communicate your Dauphine course schedule to EUSA as soon as possible. Be aware that you are entitled to only one vacation week during the program, corresponding to the French academic calendar winter vacations, from April 14th to April 20th. Even if you are on vacation at Dauphine aside from these dates, you still have to attend your internship. Academic work The academic value of your internship, and therefore your credits, is validated through academic assignments: • a written report in French, including an analytical paper (8-10 pages) and 2 experience-oriented assignments (Interview of a coworker and Personal conclusion - 2 pages each); • an oral defense at the end of the semester (20 minutes in front of a jury). The writing of the Internship Report with its various components is a progressive process. This as well as the preparation for the oral defense are monitored through four workshops with a BU Paris faculty (Hanadi Sobh), plus regular email communication. The schedule for these workshops, the deadline for each assignment, as well as the oral defense date, will be determined according to your internship and Dauphine course hours. For more information, see the following link: http://www.bu.edu/paris/files/2012/01/Internship-syllabus-in-english-for-Dauphine.pdf CULTURAL REIMBURSEMENT Boston University Paris will invite you to several cultural activities throughout the semester, provided it doesn’t conflict with your work and class schedule. To participate in these, you will be in contact with our Cultural Activities Coordinator (Elisabeth Montfort-Siewert). In addition, you can be reimbursed for your cultural outings (cinema, theater, museums, etc.) up to 130€ for the whole semester. 3 GRADING CONVERSION Numerical Grade out of 20 for French Universities Equivalent Letter Grade for Boston University Explanation Numerical Grade out of 20 for French Universities Equivalent Letter Grade for Boston University Explanation 15 - 20 A EXCELLENT 9 C+ SUFFICIENT 13 - 14 A- VERY GOOD 8 C SUFFICIENT 12 B+ GOOD 7 C- SUFFICIENT 11 B GOOD 5-6 D POOR 10 B- SATISFACTORY 1-4 F FAIL Due to the French system of higher education’s agenda, the Boston University office in Paris only receives grades from Dauphine at the end of August for the Spring semester.
