After demobilization he joined the Colonial Medical Service, and was stationed in Tanzania before moving to Canada in 1949. Survived by his partner, Lorraine Dominey, a daughter, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. “For over 50 years he served the medical needs of patients from Chester to West Dover 7 days a week through house calls and at his office in Hubbards. He said he had delivered almost 3000 babies during his time in practice.” A former patient wrote: “Dr. Cole was a doctor in a billion. At a time when few families had cars at home during the day, he came to our home many times to care for our 5 children. Survived by his wife Margarite, 4 children and 4 grandchildren. “Ricardo, who passed away at home following a very lengthy illness, touched the lives of many multigenerational families during his 40-plus years of general practice in Sudbury, Ont., where he was instrumental in establishing the first 24-hour physician-staffed emergency department in Northern Ontario. Being in general practice allowed him to experience the entire range of family medicine, from obstetrics, pediatrics, geriatrics and surgery to, on occasion, the suturing of family pets.” Hadden, Robert, Thompkins, Myles G., Chester, NS; Dalhousie University, 1949; former head, obstetrics and gynecology, and professor, Dalhousie University; senior member, CMA. Died Aug. 25, 2014, aged 90.
