Amidst all the suitcases sit musicians ready to jump out at the next opportunity for a show, all the while playing their favorite tunes in a cacophonous show of merriment. So arrives the traveling troupe of musicians with their transportable theater and their latest show from Paris – Le Devin du Village. A timeless love story with enchanting music by Jean Jacques Rousseau, Le Devin du Village is a musical comedy whose inspiration is found in the simplicity of nature and the conviction of mankind. Asociación Cultural Le Tendre Amour | www.letendreamour.com | [email protected] |+34 637 799 096 Le Devin du Village A chamber opera The Setting Rousseau composed Le Devin du Village as a thankyou to Madame de Pompadour for her ability to convince the courts to tolerate his ideas. Le Devin du Village was then taken from castle to castle on a transportable theater. In taking our inspiration from these theater troupes, we have chosen to “bring everything with us”. Random objects burst from the suitcases and turn into props, extra clothes found in an old trunk turn out to be perfect for the roles of the main characters. In short, everything that was ordinary before is now extraordinary. Just as Rousseau used the simplicity of a pastoral to create his love story, we use simple elements to retell this timeless tale. In mind is a quality concert for a music-loving and opera-loving public, but we also want to open the arts to a public who normally thinks “this is not for me” – a public who would have never imagined enjoying opera or classical music before. Performers participating in the creation of this opera will work together to convey its beauty and spirit to a diverse public, captivating the hearts of all. “A triumph of rustic virtue over higher-class corruption”. Colin and Colette love each other, though each suspect the other of infidelity. Both look for advice to the wise soothsayer of the town (Le Devin du Village) to be able to strengthen their love. After a series of deceptions, Colin and Colette are finally reunited and marry. Characters Colette (soprano), a shepherdess Colin (tenor), a shepherd, The Soothsayer (bass), and a chorus of villagers (the musicians are actors as well!) The intermedio will be performed in its entirety, (Le Devin du Village lasts approximately 45 minutes) following the manuscript closely. Popular tunes from the era will also be heard as the “traveling troupe” arrives, full of energy and bringing their own stories to the performance. The soprano tries to seduce the gatekeeper, the lute player believes she is of royal blood, the tenor bothers the flute player to no end….and backstage chaos turns to front and center action. Le Devin du Village will be set in the late 1940s, taking advantage of the parallels found in the original plot with stories from our era - stories that relate closer to the public of today. Just as the public in Rousseau´s time would have fantasized about pastorale Arcadia, we will also recall those bygone days from generations ago. It was so popular that this early classical style work was played regularly for the next 6O YEARS. After having heard the premiere in Fontainebleau in 1752, King Louis XV couldn`t stop humming although apparently quite off key - some of the tunes that told of the pastoral, innocent life of the French countryside. So great was the influence of this opera that it served as the inspiration to Mozart when he later composed his opera Bastien and Bastienne. A remarkable theorist who is known for his letter on French music and his music dictionary, few know that music was also one of his professions. Rousseau composed Le Devin du Village in 1752, at a time when the pastoral lyric genre, initiated by the prestigious Lully and Moliere at the end of the previous century, was at its end. The idea of the pastoral is a reflection of aristocracy, but Rousseau parodies this, and hints of the decline of aristocracy and of better times to come.
