VNH Gallery est heureuse d’initier son programme « insight » en présentant
le projet de Moussa Sarr « Duo des Chats ». Jouer avec les codes et surprendre le visiteur sont les lignes directrices des courts projets qui formeront
cette programmation alternative de VNH Gallery.
VNH Gallery is pleased to introduce the programme “insight” by presenting Moussa Sarr’s “Duo des Chats”. Playing with the artistic codes as well
as surprising the visitor are the guidelines for the short projects that will be
part of this alternative programming of VNH Gallery.
Pour VNH Gallery, l’artiste présente trois oeuvres : sa toute nouvelle vidéo
intitulée « Duo des Chats » est présentée dans la première salle accompagnée de trois collages tandis qu’une de ses oeuvres emblématiques, « Rising
Carpet », trône au centre de la salle principale.
The artist will be showcasing three artworks for VNH Gallery; his brand
new video entitled “Duo des Chats” will be displayed in the first room
together with three collages whilst one of his most emblematic artwork,
“Rising Carpet”, will stand in the middle of the main room.
Inspirée du célèbre « Duo des Chats » (1825) de Rossini - une pièce populaire uniquement composée de répétitions de l’onomatopée « miaou », le
miaulement du chat -, l’autofilmage réalisé par Moussa Sarr porte un regard
désabusé et plein d’autodérision sur les notions de fraternité et d’entre-aide.
Habitué à se glisser dans la peau de différents animaux dans ses vidéos
- mouches, chevaux, grenouilles -, Moussa Sarr interprète un chat dont le
comportement se modifie alors qu’il subit une agression sans que personne
ne lui porte assistance. Il passe alors du statut de victime à celui d’agresseur,
comme si l’autodéfense était la seule réponse à apporter au manque de
solidarité qui caractérise nos sociétés contemporaines.
Inspired by the famous Rossini’s “Duo des Chats” (1825) – an acclaimed
play composed entirely with the repetition of the onomatopoeia “meow”,
a cat’s meowing–this self-shooting film evokes a wry look of self-mockery
and self-derision on notions of brotherhood and mutual aid. Moussa Sarr
is used to getting under various animals’ skin in his videos – flies, horses,
frogs – and in here; he renders a performance of a cat whose behaviour
changes when he endures an assault without anybody providing him with
assistance. He goes from the status of victim to the one of a perpetrator, as
if self-defence were the only providing answer for the lack of solidarity that
defines our contemporary societies.
Trois affiches issues de la série « POWERFUL! » (2011) sont placardées sur un
mur de la première salle. Réalisées en 2011, soit l’année où le Front National
prend le virage de la « dédiabolisation », Moussa Sarr colle ces affiches dans
les rues par nécessité de résistance. En surfant habilement sur des équilibres
instables à l’aide de références que l’on comprend autant qu’elles nous désarment, Moussa Sarr créé le dialogue. Ici, le symbole du poing levé des
Black Panthers accolé à la flamme lepéniste créé une image difficile à cerner
tant les références culturelles semblent s’entrechoquer.
Three posters from the collection “POWERFUL” are plastered on the wall
in the first room, which were completed in 2011, the year, where the Front
National‘s “anti-demonization” is at a turning point, Moussa Sarr sticks up
these posters in the streets as a craving for resistance. The artist creates
a dialogue by skilfully gliding on unsteady harmonies with the prism of
references that we understand as much as we are disturbed by. Here, the
symbol of the Black Panthers’ raised fist along “Le Pen’s torch” – emblem of
the French extreme right political party – creates an image difficult to grasp
as cultural references seem to clash.
Dans la salle principale, c’est un tapis aux motifs orientaux - Rising Carpet
- et équipé d’hélices qui accueille le spectateur alors littéralement confronté
à un objet longtemps cité dans la mythologie perse et arabe avant d’être
largement popularisé par le conte Les Mille et Une Nuits : le tapis volant.
L’oeuvre allie ici cliché orientaliste et finesse technologique en s’imposant
comme une métaphore de l’élévation physique et spirituelle. Ici se joue la
rencontre d’un objet militaire emblématique du XXIème siècle - le drone - et
d’un objet fantasmagorique ayant traversé les âges. Ce tapis s’animera et
volera littéralement à l’occasion du vernissage de l’exposition.
Moussa Sarr est né en 1984 à Ajaccio (France), il vit et travaille entre Londres
& Paris.

In the main room, the ”Rising Carpet”– a carpet with oriental motifs equipped with propellers – welcomes the spectator only to confront him literally
with an object mentioned in Persian and Arabic mythology for a very
long time before becoming widely popularised by the Arabian tale One
Thousand and One Nights: ”The Flying Carpet”. This artwork combines
Orientalist clichés and technological finesse in a metaphor of physical and
spiritual elevation. Here, what takes place, is an encounter of an emblematic military object of the XXI century – the drone – and a phantasmagorical,
otherworldly object, that has lingered through time. This carpet will come
to life and will literally fly at the opening.
Moussa Sarr was born in 1984, in Ajaccio (France), and he currently lives
and works between London & Paris.
