Since the fall of 2007, thanks to the full support of the Foundation’s unrestricted endowment fund, intern Anke Kausch has been tracking the ownership history of more than 100 works in the Gallery’s collection and has closed troubling provenance gaps in about one third of the cases. The work can be challenging. Kausch doggedly combs through archival documents, databases, and catalogues raisonné, and corresponds with other scholars to piece together the puzzle, which can become spotty with the passage of time. Yet sometimes a marking or a label on a work itself provides an important detail that leads to a complete reconstruction of its ownership history. Such was the case with Degas’ Woman with an Umbrella (c. 1876), purchased by the Gallery in 1969 from Marianne Feilchenfeldt and for which there was a provenance gap for the period 1919 to 1949. A German label bearing a stock number on the back of the painting provided the detail that would lead to the complete reconstruction of its ownership history. © Harquail Photography In recent years, the history of works of art that were purchased, sold, or created between 1933 and 1945 — a tumultuous period during which the Nazi regime conducted a massive confiscation of art and cultural property throughout Europe — has become a Anke Kausch, Intern/stagiaire Edgar Degas, Woman with an Umbrella (Berthe Jeantaud) [c. 1876], 61 ¥ 50.2 cm. Le père de Walter Feilchenfeldt Jr. avait rencontré sa future 62475_Spring09FINAL.qxp:Spring09 09/02/09 5:52 PM Page 29 ce Research Kausch inquired with Marianne’s son, Walter Feilchenfeldt Jr., a Zurich art dealer whose father had run the Berlin-based Cassirer gallery before the war. Having kept his father’s records, Feilchenfeldt was able to connect the stock number to an inventory card, confirming that the painting had been at Cassirer’s Amsterdam branch in 1929. Although the sale date had not been recorded, Feilchenfeldt Jr. was able to recount a family love story that helped to close gaps in the history of the work. His father had met his mother on a business trip to Paris in 1929. He asked her to accompany him to the Hector Brame gallery where the Degas was for sale. Although he was not struck by the portrait, his date was smitten with the work and he purchased it to impress her. Months later, it was purchased from Cassirer by Arthur Sachs, founder of Goldman Sachs, who possessed it until 1968 when Marianne bought it back.
