A Passion for Magnificent Drawings
Six years ago, philanthropist Marjorie Bronfman’s lifelong passion for drawings and her esteem for the National Gallery of Canada led her to make a
generous gift of $350,000 to the NGC Foundation to create the Marjorie and
Gerald Bronfman Drawing Acquisition Endowment Fund. Her generosity has
since allowed the Gallery to enrich its collection with four exceptional drawings, including three “firsts.”
A Roman Capriccio with Figures (c. 1745), by Giovanni Paolo Panini, is
considered to be a perfect illustration of the development of Italian
Neoclassicism. This was the Gallery’s first acquisition of a work by Panini,
the most celebrated painter of Roman vedute — views drawn from life — in the
18th century.
Tullia Driving her Chariot over the Dead Body of her Father (1798), by
Thomas de Thomon, an architect and etcher who contributed significantly to
the development of Neoclassicism across Europe, enhances the Gallery’s collection of Neoclassical works.
Saint Nicholas Triumphs over Heresy (c. 1750), by Gottfried Bernhard Göz,
a master of large multi-figured compositions who also received many commissions for grand-scale ceiling paintings, was the Gallery’s first acquisition
of a drawing by an important German ceiling painter of the 18th century, a
period for which drawings by fresco painters are extremely rare.
The most recent acquisition thanks to the Endowment, Design for an
Altar (c. 1587—88) is a rare architectural drawing by Jacopo Zucchi, who
trained with Giorgio Vasari and helped him decorate Florence’s Palazzo

La passion que la philanthrope Marjorie Bronfman a vouée toute sa vie au dessin et l’estime qu’elle
porte au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada l’ont incitée, il y a six ans, à faire un généreux don de
350 000 $ à la Fondation du MBAC pour créer le Fonds d’acquisition de dessins Marjorie et Gerald
Bronfman. Grâce à sa générosité, le Musée a acquis quatre dessins exceptionnels, dont trois « premières ».
Un caprice romain avec personnages (v. 1745) de Giovanni Paolo Panini, incarne à merveille l’essor
du néoclassicisme italien. Il s’agit de la première œuvre de Panini acquise par le Musée, le plus célèbre peintre du XVIIIe siècle de vues (vedute) romaines.
Tullie conduisant son char sur le cadavre de son père (1798) de Thomas de Thomon, architecte et
graveur qui contribua considérablement à l’épanouissement du néoclassicisme en Europe. Ce dessin
de Thomon enrichit la collection d’œuvres néoclassiques du Musée.
Saint Nicolas triomphant de l’Hérésie (v. 1750) de Gottfried Bernhard Göz, un artiste connu pour ses
grandes compositions à plusieurs figures et ses peintures de plafond. Il s’agit là aussi de la première
acquisition du Musée d’une œuvre d’un illustre maître allemand du XVIIIe siècle, une époque où les
dessins réalisés par des peintres de fresques sont très rares.
Projet d’autel (v. 1587-1588) de Jacopo Zucchi est un rare dessin d’architecture. Élève de Giorgio
Vasari et son assistant lors de la décoration du Palazzo Vecchio de Florence et du Vatican, Zucchi fut
ensuite attitré à la cour des Médicis, à Rome. Cette première acquisition d’une œuvre de Zucchi enrichit le volet dessins d’ornementation et d’architecture de la collection européenne du Musée et fera
partie de l’exposition De Raphaël à Annibale Carracci. L’art de la Rome pontificale.

artist-in-residence at the Medici Court in
Rome. The Gallery’s first acquisition of a work
by Zucchi, this drawing enriches the architectural and ornamental drawings component of
its European collection and will be part of the
Gallery’s 2009 summer exhibition, From
Raphael to Annibale Carracci: The Art of Papal
Rome.
From her own collection, Mrs. Bronfman
has also donated two 18th-century drawings
by Italian master Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo —
An Angel Holding a Martyr’s Palm (c. 1783) and
Angels with a Laurel Wreath (c. 1783).
An unreserved admirer of drawings, Mrs.
Bronfman is delighted with these additions to
the Gallery’s collection. “I have long known
that the Gallery shares my love and fascination for drawing, an art form that is relatively
little-known. This is why I decided to help in
the way I did. It is most gratifying to see the
collection grow so wonderfully,” she states.
The Marjorie and Gerald Bronfman
Drawing Acquisition Endowment Fund of the
NGC Foundation will provide permanent
financial support to the Gallery’s collection of
drawings.

Fervente admiratrice de ce procédé artistique, madame Bronfman se réjouit de ces
ajouts à la collection du Musée. « Je sais depuis longtemps que le Musée partage mon
amour et ma fascination pour le dessin, une
forme d’art relativement peu connue. C’est ce
qui m’a poussée à faire ce choix dans le but
d’aider le Musée. Je suis extrêmement heureuse de constater que la collection s’enrichit
de façon aussi extraordinaire. »
Le Fonds d’acquisition de dessins Marjorie
et Gerald Bronfman de la Fondation du MBAC
offrira une aide financière permanente à la
collection de dessins du MBAC.
