Before starting to work on a piece, he will subject it to a very close examination. He will then tell his client what he thinks needs to be done to restore it to good condition whilst preserving its authenticity, how much this will cost and how long it is likely to take. He restores any parts that are damaged and replaces any that are missing or broken. Parts affected by wear and tear will be reconditioned using techniques and expertise appropriate to the period when the item was made, basing his work on his knowledge of traditional materials and methods. The cases described here include : A wardrobe made in 1829 in Moulis, Couserans, which required restoration of all the lower parts plus one of the sides. A piece of furniture from la Barousse, typical of central Pyrenean traditional style, with extra-flat "limande" sides. Items such as these were sold to be assembled by the client. The front often had plenty of decorative work but the back and sides were untreated and nailed on with forged nails.
