The Bit Itinerary
Alternative route (Continue) At the crossing with the route de Vernon turn left towards the Davids (Vaulnaveys) and continue about 50 meters. When you see the sign for the limit of Vaulnaveys, turn right and walk down a field that will bring you to the paved road chemin de la Combe. Cross it and continue to walk down towards the route du Vacher. After 150 m. take a left and walk around a house. You will join the main walking tour here. If you do not take the alternate route, after having turned right (see 5) continue on the forest road for one hundred meters. You will find the route des Rapeaux. In the turn, walk to your right along the steeply declining chemin des Poneys until you see the junction of les Rapeaux (five adjoining roads). Cross the street and walk down a grassy path in front of you (chemin du Chêne) until you reach the route de Vernon. Cross this road also and continue on the path in front of you that will lead to the route du Bouloud at the Corjons. Take a right and walk another fifty meters, then turn left in front of a water trough and swing to your left on a paved street called chemin de l’Abreuvoir until you once again reach the route du Bouloud. When you arrive at the Vacher, cross the route at the traffic safety mirror, then walk thirty meters down and left. Turn right just before a house next to the metal bathtub (the alternative route arrives here). 6 Alt. 500 m > Take the grassy path that will lead you into a very pretty valley. After walking around an obstacle set in front of an animal barrier, continue walking down until you are level with a dilapidated bamboo cabin. Walk around the cabin on the left and continue straight forward. You will soon see two buildings in the impasse de Pré-Métral. Turn immediately right and cross the park towards the thermal hospital's gazebo. Uriage-les-Bains is a thermal station whose architecture is typical of the early XIXth century with a thermal park containing a variety of exotic trees. Perched upon a rocky spur, the original Uriage castle was most probably a fortification made of wood and earth. The texts of the XIIth and XIIIth centuries mention an old castle or « Chateauvieux ». In 1339, the site includes two towers and an enclosure. In the XVth century, a new edifice called Newcastle or « Châteauneuf » was built and then a century later a gallery was constructed to link the two buildings together. The exterior of the castle has remained almost unchanged to the present day. The castle itself was purchased in 1978 by a private party and transformed into an apartment complex. The current location of the « Maison des Associations » was originally an experimental farm built in 1877 by the owner of the castle. The «Belvédère» hotel was restored and became a municipal cultural center in 2000. The municipal pool was built in 1955; it is still very popular today. The path climbs very quickly over the residential center of the village. In climbing this elevation of 500 meters, you can examine the flora and admire the viewpoints. The chemin Naclard marks the divide between the pine forest and the agricultural and residential zones. Here you can see a beautiful panorama of the valleys of Uriage and Vaulnaveys before walking down through the woods. Walking tours Circuit n° 1 The Bit Itinerary > The Hiker's Charter 1. 2. 3. 4.
