Donald CHARLES – PRODUCER (Cine Institute)
Donald Charles is a Haitian director, production manager and producer, born March 22, 1976, married and father of two
children. He studied film at the Cine Institute from 2008 to 2011.He produced his first feature film, Reincarnation, by
Fréro Pierre while he was at the Institute. He is currently production coordinator of the production unit of the Cine
Institute. He has been line producer for Film Master (Italy), Zadig Production (France) and Boulevard des Prod
(France). He completed an internship at EyeSteelFilm in Canada and ARTE Journal in Strasbourg. He was resident at
La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde of the Cannes Festival 2013 with the film project, Carmen by Pierre Lucson
Bellegarde. He participated in the 33rd Douarnenez Film Festival, Brest (France) as the director of short documentary
on the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010. He has worked with Jonathan Stack, Ilan Ziv, Sophie Rosengart, Fabrizo
Razza…
Pierre Lucson BELLEGARDE – DIRECTOR
Born in Jacmel Haiti, Pierre Lucson became interested in art at the age of 7, when he was recovering from surgery.
Pierre Lucson trained in filmmaking, directing, screenwriting and sound mix. His work often deals with the plight of
marginalized communities and people with disabilities. Some of his short films (Handicap Man Maswife, Same Blood,
The Compass) have been screened at many festivals and won awards. Currently, he is working on rewriting his first
feature film, Carmen, which was presented at La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde in Cannes in 2013. He will soon
be in Nantes to participate in the Produire au Sud workshop, it is looking for a residence for rewriting and coproduction.
SYNOPSIS
DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT (extract in french)
Carmen is the story of a young Haitian deaf-mute girl who
wants to participate in a folk dance contest. She persuades
Eric, a homosexual ex-dancer who has withdrawn into
himself after being aggressed, to train her. The hardest part
is that Carmen is deaf and dumb.
«Très jeune à l'école, à l‘âge de 10 ans, j'ai lu l'histoire de Hellen Adams
Keller qui était sourde-muette et aveugle dès le début de sa vie, mais qui
parvint à obtenir un diplôme universitaire grâce à sa détermination. […]
Le second élément qui m'intriguait d'avantage, c'est que j'ai grandi à
proximité d'une petite sourde-muette. Tous les jours j'allais là-bas pour
qu'elle m'apprenne certains gestes basiques en langage des signes. Un
jour, en allant lui rendre visite, j'ai entendu une musique assourdissante
dans la maison. Quand je me suis rapproché, j'ai vu la fille renverser un
haut-parleur contre le sol et faire des pas de danse en accord avec le
rythme qui vibrait sur le parquet. J'étais surpris et cette technique est
restée gravée dans ma mémoire. […]
Je veux tourner un film à propos de deux parias pour exposer l'hypocrisie
qui siège dans la société haïtienne ; rappeler que nos ancêtres ne
défendaient pas une catégorie bien spécifique de la population pendant la
cérémonie de Bois-Caïman. Je veux faire revivre un peu de l'âme révoltée
d’Haïti à travers mes personnages principaux. Eric et Carmen prennent
conscience qu'ils vivent dans une forme mentale d'esclavage. Pour leur
communauté, ils sont des anormaux. Leur seul manière de prouver leur
humanité, c'est la danse et leur seule arme c'est leur talent. C’est aussi ce
que j’aimerais faire avec mon film. »
