A town lies in the valley, a pale day comes to an end. It will not be much longer, until neither moon nor stars, only night in the heaven stands. From all the mountains descends fog upon the town, Doch als dem Wand'rer graute, Da ging ein Lichtlein auf im Grund Und aus den Rauch und Nebel Begann ein Lobgesang Aus Kindermund. no roof, nor yard, nor house, or sound pierces through its smoke, hardly even a bridge is seen. But as the traveler began to fear, a small light appeared down below, and out of the smoke and mist began a soft hymn from the mouth of a child. Laue Sommernacht Mild Summer Night Laue Sommernacht, am Himmel Stand kein Stern, im weiten Walde Suchten wir uns tief im Dunkel, Und wir fanden uns. Mild summer night in the sky, stood no stars, in the vast forests. We searched for each other deep in the darkness, and we found each other. Found each other in the vast forests, in the night, the starless one. We held each other in amazement-in the dark night. Was not our whole life just a wandering, just a seeking? There into life's darkness love, fell your light. Bei Dir Ist Es Traut With You it is Cozy Bei dir ist es traut, zage Uhren schlugen wie aus alten Tagen, komm mir ein Liebes sagen, aber nur nicht laut! With you it is cozy, faint clocks strike as in olden days, come and speak to me of love, but not loudly! Somewhere a gate creaks, outside in the drifting blossoms, the evening listens at the window. Let us remain quiet, so no one will know we are here! Ich Wandle Unter Blumen I Walk Amid the Flowers Ich wandle unter Blumen Und blühe selber mit, Ich wandle wie im Traume Und schwanke bei jedem Schritt. I walk amid the flowers and I blossom with them; I walk as if in a dream and sway with every step. O halt mich fest, Geliebte! Oh hold me tightly, beloved! Or, from love's intoxication I will collapse at your feet and the garden is full of people! The moon white shines in the woods; from each branch comes a voice beneath the boughs... O bien aimée. L'étang reflète, Profond miroir, La silhouette Du saule noir Où le vent pleure... Oh beloved. The pool reflects, deeply mirrored, the silhouette of the black willow where the wind weeps... Let us dream, it is the hour. A vast and tender calm seems to descend from the sky that the moon makes iridescent. It is the exquisite hour. In the wind and in the flood you dissolve in fragile foam, you dissolve in a sob-poor heart full of bitterness. Take your flight in the blue sky, and see that death is not cruel. You will have the peace of God. Come to us immortals. Dance with us in the beautiful ocean, the morning or the night, under the moon shining. Plonge avec nous dans le flot transparent; chante au soleil dans l'écume et le vent Plunge with us in the transparent waves, sing to the sun in the foam and the wind. mer berce nous dans tes bras caressant mer berce nous sur ton cœur frémissant. Sea, rock us in your caressing arms. Sea, rock us above your shuddering heart. The history of a pear, it is plucked from the leaves and so and so, It slammed in three times of attack. It must drink to the pear, a good strike, it must drink to the pear, It must drink. And that's all. In the wind and in the flood you dissolve in fragile foam, you dissolve in a sob-poor heart full of bitterness. Take your flight in the blue sky, and see that death is not cruel. You will have the peace of God. Come to us immortals. Voi, che sapete You, who know Voi, che sapete che cosa é amor, donne, vedete s'io l'ho nel cor! Quello ch'io provo, vi ridirò; You, who know what love is, ladies, see if I have it in my heart! That which I feel, to you, I will explain; to me, it is new; I don't understand. é per me nuovo; capir nol so. Sento un affetto pien di desir, Ch'ora é diletto, ch'ora é martir. Gelo, e poi sento l'alma avvampar, E in un momento torno a gelar. I sense a tender feeling full of desire which is pleasure and agony at once. I freeze and then my soul is on fire, and in another moment I am freezing. Ricerco un bene fuori di me, non so ch'il tiene, non so cosé. Sospiro e gema senza voler, palpito e tremo senza saper, I seek a prize outside of myself, I don't know who it holds, I don't know what it is. I sigh and moan without wanting to, I tremble without knowing why, non trovo pace notte né di; ma pur mi piace languir cosi! I don't find peace in night or day; yet, it pleases me to suffer thus! A Letter From Sullivan Ballou The text from this piece is the actual text from a letter written by Major Sullivan Ballou to his wife, Sarah. He never got the chance to send it, for it was written just prior to his death at the First Battle of Bull Run near Manassas, Virginia. It was found amongst his belongings, and sent to his widow. Sarah Shumway Ballou never remarried, and lived the rest of her life in New Jersey, with her son. She is buried next to what is believed to be the remains of her late husband, Sullivan.
