Biographical note: Thorsten V. Koeppl
Thorsten Koeppl is an associate professor of economics and RBC Fellow at Queen’s
University. From 2004 to 2010, he was an assistant professor at Queen’s University. Prior
to that, he was a research economist at the European Central Bank (2002 to 2004) and a
Visitor in the Research Department of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis
(2000 to 2002).
Professor Koeppl’s research focuses on financial markets infrastructure—in particular,
payment clearing and settlement systems—macroeconomics and financial markets policy.
His work has been published in leading economics journals, such as the Journal of
Economic Theory, the European Economic Review and the Journal of Economic
Dynamics and Control. Professor Koeppl has been a member of the C. D. Howe
Institute’s Monetary Policy Council since 2007. He has also participated in consulting
and policy work for several organizations, including the CESifo Institute in Munich,
Germany (2011), the Bank of Canada (2010), the European Central Bank (2005, 2007
and 2010), the BIS Committee on Payment and Settlement Systems (2008) and the
C. D. Howe Institute (2006 to 2010).
Professor Koeppl has received a number of awards and grants, including research grants
from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and the Walter H.
Heller Memorial Dissertation Fellowship.
Professor Koeppl is a native of Germany. He received a Vordiplom in management from
the University of Eichstaett-Ingolstadt (1994), a licentiatus rerum politicarum (BA in
economics) from the University of Basel (1997) and a PhD in economics from the
University of Minnesota (2002).

Thorsten Koeppl est professeur agrégé d’économie et associé de recherche RBC à
l’Université Queen’s. Il a occupé dans cette université le poste de professeur adjoint de
2004 à 2010. Il a travaillé auparavant comme économiste-chercheur à la Banque centrale
européenne (2002-2004) et chercheur invité au département de recherche de la Banque
fédérale de réserve de Minneapolis (2000-2002).
Les recherches de M. Koeppl portent sur l’infrastructure des marchés financiers –
particulièrement les systèmes de paiement, de compensation et de règlement –, la
macroéconomie et les politique relatives aux marchés financiers. Ses travaux ont été
publiés par des revues prestigieuses d’économie comme le Journal of Economic Theory,
la European Economic Review et le Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control.
M. Koeppl est membre du Conseil de la politique monétaire de l’Institut C. D. Howe
depuis 2007. Il a contribué au travail de consultation et d’établissement de politiques d’un
certain nombre d’organisations, dont l’Institut CES IFO de Munich, en Allemagne
(2011), la Banque du Canada (2010), la Banque centrale européenne (2005, 2007 et
2010), le Comité de la Banque des Règlements Internationaux sur les systèmes de
paiement et de règlement (2008) et l’Institut C. D. Howe (2006-2010).
M. Koeppl a reçu plusieurs prix et bourses au cours de sa carrière, notamment des
bourses de recherche du Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada et la
bourse commémorative Walter H. Heller.
M. Koeppl est originaire d’Allemagne. Il a obtenu un diplôme préparatoire (Vordiplom)
en gestion à l’Université d’Eichstaett-Ingolstadt (1994), un baccalauréat en économie
(licentiatus rerum politicarum) à l’Université de Bâle (1997) et un doctorat en économie
à l’Université du Minnesota (2002).
