GRAMMAR RELATIVE PRONOUNS Complete these examples from the text p 28-29 - He bought Shakespeare’s Complete Works, WHICH he recited at night. - Grandpa married my grandma, WHO was a hat maker. - Granpa was fascinated by the great bridges and skyscrapers THAT were being built. - I want you to build skyscrapers THAT reach for the sky. - It was I WHO became an architect and WHO fulfilled grandpa’s wish. a) b) Quelle est la nature grammaticale de ces mots? Expliquer l’emploi de ces mots. -> PRONOMS RELATIFS -> ILS REMPLACENT L’ANTÉCÉDENT REMEMBER ! ! ! Fonction du relatif Antécédent animé Antécédent inanimé Who Which - that Who(m) – that – Ø Which - that – Ø Whose Whose Where – when – why - how SUJET COMPLEMENT GENITIF (complément du nom) ADVERBIAL (lieu, temps, cause, manière) I. Le relatif est SUJET d’un verbe. Antécédant animé: The boy WHO lives next door is Tim. Antécédant inanimé: The car THAT is in front of the door is mine. WHICH II. COD Antécédant animé: Antécédant inanimé: The boy Ø I met yesterday is Tim. THAT WHO(M) The car Ø THAT WHICH The boy Ø I spoke TO is Tim. THAT WHO TO WHOM I spoke yesterday is Tim. I like is in front of the door. a. COI Antécédant animé: Antécédant inanimé: The car Ø we looked AT yesterday is a Ford. THAT AT WHICH we looked yesterday is a Ford. GRAMMAR RELATIVE PRONOUNS 1 On emploie OBLIGATOIREMENT T H A T ou Ø : a) après un S U P E R L A T I F Ex: It’s the funniest film Ø / THAT I’ve ever seen b) après « F I R S T » et « L A S T » (puisque ce sont des superlatifs) Ex: It’s the first thing Ø / THAT we did when we got there. c) après «A L L », «O N L Y », «S O M E T H I N G », «A N Y T H I N G », «E V E R Y T H I N G » Ex: I’m afraid it’s all Ø / THAT I can tell you. Ex: Mr Wells is the only male teacher Ø / THAT we have. Ex: Everything Ø / THAT we did was useless. N.B. : We did everything THAT could be done. Ex: W H A T we saw astonished us. = the things that… Ex: I don’t understand WHAT she says. = the things that… Ex: When she sees WHAT I have done, he’ll get furious. = the things that… Ex: WHAT saved Jane’s life is her seatbelt. = the things that… b) , WHICH reprend toute une proposition. Ex: Jane had her seatbelt on , WHICH saved her life. = ce qui – fonction sujet Ex: My cousin is always angry , WHICH is annoying for everybody. = ce que – fonction COD III. le relatif est COMPLÉMENT DU NOM (génitif) Ex: Ex: The boy WHOSE name is Tim is 15. It was a small country WHOSE population was rising. N.B. Ex: The car W H O S E door is broken is mine. -> The car w h i c h has a broken door is mine. (plus naturel) IV. LES ADVERBES RELATIFS Lieu : (the place) WHERE Ex: London is the place WHERE I want to live. Temps : (the time) WHEN Ex: I don’t remember the day WHENhe left to New York. Cause : (the reason) WHY Manière : (the way) GRAMMAR HOW Ex: He told us (the reason) WHY he didn’t want to go out. Ex: He showed me RELATIVE PRONOUNS HOW he had done it. 2
