He belonged to the artistic group "Brabant Fauvists". He started his artistic studies at the Academies of Delft and The Hague. When he was 19 years old, he left his family and country. He received his artistic training at the Academy of Ghent under the tutorship of Louis-Pierre Van Biesbroeck, afterwards he completed his studies at the Academy of Brussels where he became friends with the renowned Fauvist painter Rik Wouters. After some travels to Holland and Paris, he installed himself in Watermael-Boîtsfort, near Brussels. De Kat exhibited his work for the first time at the "Salon des Indépendants" and also participated at the "Salon des Bleus" at Galerie Georges Giroux in Brussels in 1906. He participated at the last exhibition of "La Libre Esthétique" in 1914. During the First World War he became a member of the "Section Artistique" on the battlefield. De Kat naturalised to Belgian citizenship in 1919. In the same year he participated with his oeuvre at the exhibition of "Le Cercle Artistique et Littéraire de Bruxelles" and also at the opening exhibition of the "Cercle des XV". He obtained international recognition and participated at numerous exhibitions in Barcelona, Paris, Rio de Janeiro and Venice. De Kat exhibited his works at the renowned gallery "Le Centaure" in 1921. He traveled with his friend Edgar Tytgat to Austria in 1923, where they both discovered Breughel and Cranach. His oeuvre evolved eventually, under the influence of these Flemish Primitives, towards a larger Classicism. He obtained the "Prix National des Beaux-Arts" in 1938, the "Prix Auguste Oleffe" in 1946, and also the "Prix de Portrait" in 1947.
