These services are covered only for the persons mentioned in the table below: • eye and eye health examinations; • examinations specific to a particular condition, such as strabismus; • prescription of eyeglasses or contact lenses following an examination, prescription of exercises to improve vision, or referral to another health professional. Who is covered? Persons under the age of 18 and those age 65 or over Recipients of lastresort financial assistance for at least the past 12 consecutive months, aged 18 to 64 Persons age 60 to 64 who have been receiving a spouse’s allowance under the Old Age Security Act for at least 12 consecutive months and who, without this allowance, would be entitled to last-resort financial assistance benefits Visually impaired persons (see details on reverse) What to present? One complete examination per calendar year One complete examination every two calendar years One complete examination every two calendar years None A service covered for everyone The examination needed in the event of sudden eye damage (e.g. laceration, inflammation or foreign body on the surface of the eye) is covered for everyone. Just present your valid Health Insurance Card. Examples of services excluded from coverage Regardless of age or situation, persons must pay for the following: • the purchase of eyeglasses or contact lenses; • prescription drugs and anesthetics (including ophthalmic drops) used during an examination; • eye examinations required by educational institutions, employers, insurers, summer camps, associations or organizations; • eye examinations to obtain a licence to drive a passenger vehicle.
