French Lesson Hobbies
French Lesson Plan
Hobbies
Purpose and requirements:
The lesson can be followed by students from level A2 (or end of A1), from
the DELF level scale. It can be a little difficult to introduce hobbies, and
students should already have learned some basic vocabulary words for
hobbies and how to express habits. At this point, students know the présent
and passé composé and conditionnel présent or have good understanding
of all three tenses. The lesson introduces detailed, contemporary,
personalized, hobby-related vocabulary as well as time expressions.
Lesson objectives:
• Communication: Talk about hobbies and sports, express habits and
preferences, and ask others about their hobbies
• Grammar focus: Use of articles and prépositions
• Vocabulary: Hobbies, sports, arts, and music...
• Culture: French sports and French habits for leisure activities
Learning outcome(s):
By the end of this lesson students will:
•
•
•
•
•
•
be able to talk about their favorite hobbies.
be able to ask others about their hobbies.
have learned richer vocabulary about hobbies.
understand the difference between jouer à, jouer du, etc.
use accurate expressions to express habits.
express personal preferences.
Material:
• card-size sheets of papers
Bridge-in:
1- Confidence: Students are asked to write on pieces of paper the names
of hobbies they know in French. They can be sports, leisure activities,
music, and all kinds of activities for free time.
Each student will read what he/she has written. If there are duplicate
hobbies, students should put them aside when they hear hobbies
mentioned that they have written about.
At the end of the activity, teacher collects only the unique hobbies. This
activity shows students that they already know a few hobbies; they often
write very similar vocabulary words.

Hobbies
Bridge-in (continued):
2- Correcting the assignment triggers new
vocabulary words: Teacher writes a list on the board
of all the hobbies. A short discussion follows, to see
which students do what activity, how often, etc. This is
the opportunity to review what verbs use de la / du or
à la / au
3- Teacher will use Quiz 1 to provide new vocabulary.
The students can ask the teacher for even more
hobbies and activities of interest. Quiz 1 also
introduces new expressions and reviews expressions
to talk about tastes and habits.
Text:
Guidelines and tips:
Card-size blank sheets of paper should be
available for students so they can take as many as
they need.
Teacher should set a maximum number of 10 or 15
vocabulary words, depending on students’ level.
Quiz 1 shows a few activities that are usually not
in French class books and can be used to provide
new vocabulary.
Quiz 1, part 1, can be done in class or at home.
Quiz 1, part 2, should be done as homework.
Guidelines:
Ask students to find all the sports/activities
mentioned in the text, match them with the places
where they are/can be practiced or how to seek
lessons, and add how these sports could help
people. Provide the table with the activity words
bolded.

Hobbies
Games and role play around the theme of hobbies
Games
Game 1 – Game 1 is a short contest. Students have 5 minutes, in pairs, to
find as many famous French sports champions as they can in any sport. If
the teacher does not know some of the names, students have to explain
who they are.
Game 2 – Game 2 is a who am I? type of game, but is dedicated to sports
and hobbies. A student chooses a sport or a hobby and other students
have to ask questions to guess what it is. Only yes-or-no questions are
allowed.
Tips
Game 1 is a short and easy game that is ideal for ending a lesson.
Game 2 takes more time and requires some vocabulary. Depending on
the students’ level, dictionaries or Internet access to check vocabulary
could be allowed. The teacher also can provide the missing vocabulary.
However, teacher should let students know that if vocabulary is missing
for accessories and places to practice sports/activities, they also can
ask questions.
Role play
In pairs, students prepare a short dialogue between a doctor and his/
her patient who is nervous, tired, and needs to do sports and relax with a
fun hobby. However, the patient is lazy and doesn’t like anything that the
doctor suggests.
Guidelines for role play
Teacher should indicate how to end the role play; either the doctor
gives up or he/she manages to convince his/her patient.
Teacher should advise students to use the impératif (as the doctor) as
in the text.

Closure:
Teacher can ask students to
prepare a short text to present
their favorite hobbies.
• explain why the hobby is
important to you
• explain to others what is
important to know if they want
to practice
• explain what it could bring to
others’ lives if they practiced
the same hobby
Assessment:
The correction of the homework
about students’ favorite hobbies
is a good way of assessing the
students’ level after the lesson. If
students follow all three guidelines,
they should use much of the new
vocabulary they have learned.
