David is certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada (LSUC) as a Specialist in Civil Litigation. He acts as general counsel in matters involving intellectual property litigation, commercial litigation, professional negligence, personal injury, criminal litigation and administrative law, and presides as a commercial arbitrator. In 1984, he was elected a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and was its first Canadian President in 2003-04. In 1996, he was appointed by the Minister of Justice as the Chair of the Triennial Review Commission established under the Judges Act of Canada. In 2001, he received Honorary Doctor of Law degrees from the LSUC and the University of Ottawa. In 1999, he was awarded The Advocates' Society Medal and in 2003 the Carleton Medal from the County of Carleton Law Association. In 2005, he received the Ontario Bar Association Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation. In 2010, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Pro Bono from Lexpert and in 2011, he was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2012, he was awarded the Lexpert Zenith Award: Celebrating Leadership. In 2014, he was named Alumnus of the Year by the University of Ottawa for leading the fundraising efforts to build the Ian G. Scott Courtroom, which opened at the Faculty of Law in October 2013.
