SYLLABUS Course title: World-Class Museums between Paris and Brussels Credits: 6 ECTS credits Teaching language: English Teacher in charge of the course: Céline Doutriaux, MA, Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille, Université Catholique de Lille. Specialist lecturer: Grant Douglas, MPhil, Université Catholique de Lille, (Intercultural Studies) 1) COURSE PRESENTATION Course objective: This course will provide students with an overview of the cultural heritage and museums of Lille’s region, settled in the heart of Europe, at the crossroads of London, Paris and Brussels, close to Amsterdam and Cologne. Prerequisite: To take this course, students should have good level of academic English. Content: World-Class Museums between Paris and Brussels Fieldtrips such as: - Fine arts museum, Lille, one of the premier museums in France, hosts in its imposing 19th-century building some highlights of European paintings, a collection of Antiquities, a mediaeval and Renaissance collection, 17th and 18th-century ceramics, 19th-century French sculptures and 18th-century scale models. - Architectural tour, Lille - La Piscine, Musée d'art et d'industrie, Roubaix A rehabilitated art-deco swimming pool. A magnificent museum of fine arts, ceramics, design, textiles, with artworks by Bonnard, Claudel, Dufy, Foujita, Lempicka, Picasso, Pignon, Pompon, Rodin... - LaM, Lille Métropole Museum of modern art, contemporary art and Art brut, Villeneuve d’Ascq An important museum for 20th and 21st century art in the north of Europe. Three permanent collections: modern art (Modigliani, Picasso, Léger…), contemporary art (Buren, Messager…), outsider art (Wölfli, Lesage…): more than 4.500 artworks and a unique outdoor sculpture park. - Louvre Lens Museum 1/3 - The Chateau de Versailles in 100 masterpieces, exhibition in Arras Hospice Comtesse Museum, town museum of Lille housed in a former hospital founded in 1237 by Jeanne, Countess of Flanders even if most of the buildings date back to the 15th-18th centuries. It recreates a Flemish house and the hospital it has been centuries ago, and also focuses on the commercial and artistic and scientific history of Lille.
