Florian RASTELLO Instrumentation and Measurement Institute of Technology: Montpellier Characterisation of Multilayer Piezoelectric Actuators (36DM) using Finite Element modelling (COMSOL) Work Placement Report Microscale sensor laboratory, University of the West of Scotland Paisley, Scotland April 7th to 13th June 2014 Tutor UWS: KIRK Katherine Tutor IUT Montpellier: TORRES Jérémi Florian RASTELLO Applied Physics Abstract The use of Finite Element modelling is becoming more prevalent within industry as part of the product development process. It can be used to reduce the development time of new products, identify potential issues before product is manufactured and can be used to gain a greater understanding of products in operation. In this project I had to investigate the properties of a multilayer piezoelectric stack actuator which through the implementation of Finite Element (FEM) modelling. In other words, my project is to work on characterising the piezoelectric actuator assemblies for the deformable mirror segments with COMSOL Software. These actuators could be used in adaptive optics system for the world largest and best astronomical telescope the ELT project. Adaptive optics is a method of correcting the distortion of astronomical images caused by the Earth’s atmosphere so thanks to this technology telescopes will be able corrects the atmospheric aberration. The actuators are made of multi-layers of a piezoelectric material (PZT) and electrodes, which are able to deform when we submit them to an electrical field.
