OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS External USB2.0-5.25’’ Housing „Thermaltake“ www.conrad.com Version 11/04 Handling Operation is only permissible in dry indoor areas. The product may not become damp or wet as there is risk of a fatal electric shock! Item-No. 99 85 82 Avoid the following adverse ambient conditions at the place of installation or during transport: - excessive dampness or humidity - extreme cold or heat, direct sunshine - dust or combustible gases, vapours or solvents - strong vibration, impact or blows - strong magnetic fields such as those found in the vicinity of machinery or loudspeakers. Intended Use The product is not a toy and must be kept out of the reach of children. Children cannot estimate the risks which can arise when handling electrical appliances. ° A 5.25’’ drive or a 3.5“-IDE hard disk can be installed in the housing. Operation is possible through a USB2.0/USB1.1 interface. An external power unit (for 230V~/50Hz) is used for the power supply. Scope of Delivery • • • • • • • Housing with installed interface converter Mounting bracket for installation of a 3.5’’ drive USB cable External power unit Mains cable Driver CD (not necessary for Windows ME/XP!) operating instructions Features • • • • • Installation of a 5.25’’-IDE-/ATAPI drive (e.g. DVD burner) or a 3.5’’ IDE hard disk possible Compatible with USB2.0 and USB1.1. The high-speed transmission mode is used for the USB2.0. Aluminium housing (upper and lower part) Fan with blue LED lighting integrated Cinch jacks for audio output on rear of device Safety instructions The guarantee will lapse if damage is incurred as a result of non-compliance with the operating instructions! We shall not be held liable for any consequential damage or loss! We shall not accept liability for damage to property or personal injury caused by incorrect handling or non-compliance with the safety instructions. In such cases the guarantee will lapse. For safety and licensing (CE) reasons, unauthorised conversion and/or modifications to the product are not permitted. The product is designed in accordance with protection class 2. Only a correct mains socket (230V/50Hz) for the public supply grid may be used as the source of power. Devices operated using the mains voltage must be kept out of the reach of children. Particular care must therefore be exercised if children are present. The device is not a toy. Handle the product with care. It can be damaged through impact, blows or by being dropped even from a low height. Installation of drive • Carefully press on the rear of housing (at the connections) both dark grey sideways plastic screens outwards till you can take them off (they are suspended in front and sideways or behind fastened with clips). • Then, lift off the upper cover of the housing. • Set the plug-in jumpers on the drive to be installed to „MASTER“ (see instructions for drive, imprint on drive or information on the Internet). • When installing a 3.5’’ IDE hard drive, you must screw the supplied mounting brackets sideways to the hard drive. After that, insert the hard drive in the housing. • Before installing a 5.25’’ IDE-/ATAPI drive (e.g. DVD burner), first remove the plastic front screen. After that, insert the drive into the housing from the front. • Inside the housing, connect the flat cable to the drive. Pin 1 is marked in colour; Pin 1 at the drive is on one side of the power plug. • Connect the 5.25’’ power plug to your drive. • With 5.25’’ drives, it is possible to connect the audio cable to the 4-pin audio connection. Pay attention to the correct orientation (red cable = right audio signal, white cable = left audio signal, black cable = ground). Both of these cinch jacks are then the source of the audio signal (not during DVD replay, this is technically not possible!). • Screw the inserted drive tight with 4 fitting screws. • Put on the housing cover correctly. • Replace both lateral plastic screens in front and fasten them in with the clips sideways and in rear. Thus, the device can be opened and closed without tools. Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room to a warm one. The condensation produced may destroy the product under certain circumstances. Apart from this, is risk of an electric shock! Allow the device to reach room temperature before connecting it to the power supply. This may take several hours. Make sure that the insulation of the entire product is neither damaged nor destroyed. Replace a damaged power supply cable with one of the same type. Never repair a damaged power supply cable! Always check the product for damage before it is used! If you detect any damage, do NOT connect the product to the mains voltage! Danger of death! It must be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible if - the appliance is visibly damaged, - the device does not operate any longer and - the appliance has been stored for long periods of time under unfavourable conditions or - the appliance has been subject to considerable stress in transit. Servicing or repair work may only be carried out by a specialist workshop. When setting up the product, make sure that the cable is neither bent nor squeezed. Cleaning The use of a clean, dry, soft and lint-free cloth is sufficient to clean the product. You can easily remove dust with a clean, soft brush and a vacuum cleaner. Tips and information • USB devices can be plugged in and unplugged whilst the PC is in operation. You should observe the fact thereby, however, that files could be damaged or Windows could crash if the cable is pulled out during data transmission (or the housing switched off or the power unit disconnected). With Windows ME/XP an arrow symbol appears in the menu bar through which you can instruct Windows to disconnect the device, i.e. to terminate the data transmission so that you can disconnect the connecting cable without any risk. • USB2.0 devices are compatible downwards That means that the USB2.0 housing with the installed drive also functions on conventional, „slow“ USB1.1 ports – but then only at the maximum USB1.1 speed (effective approx. 800kByte/s to 1MByte/s). Several MBytes/s are possible with USB2.0. Connection • Switch on your computer and wait until the operating system has booted up completely. • Connect the low-voltage of the supplied power unit with the appropriate jack on the rear of the housing. • Connect the power unit via the supplied mains cable to a mains socket of the public supply grid (230V~/50Hz). • Connect the USB jack on the rear with a free USB2.0 port of your PC and switch the housing on (switch on the rear). • Of course you can also use a conventional USB1-1 port of the PC instead of a USB2.0 port. The transmission speed is very slow (USB1.1, approx. 1MByte/s) thereby. • Windows ME and XP recognise the drive automatically; the drivers required are contained in ME/XP meaning that no installation of a driver is necessary. • For Windows 98, use the supplied driver CD (insert CD and follow all Windows instructions).
