Seattle Children’s Hospital Final Master Plan
ZIMMER GUNSUL FRASCA ARCHITECTS LLP pour le Seattle Children’s Hospital
The Seattle Children’s Hospital Final Major Institution Master Plan is the culmination of two
years of planning, nearly 25 Citizens Advisory Committee and subcommittee meetings and
ongoing community involvement, including over 25 outreach activities or meetings. It represents
a collaborative vision for the hospital and the surrounding neighborhood. This vision is supported
by substantive standards which guide future development through subsequent environmental
review and the corresponding decision making and public permit approvals. It is responsive to the
community need for increased pediatric health care, environmental stewardship and the livability
of the neighborhood.

90% Recovery of Preconsumer Food Discards
Environmental Protection Agency
The Medical Center Hospital of Vermont (MCHV) Campus of Fletcher Allen Health Care
delivers approximately 90% of its food preparation scraps and steam table leftovers to an off-site
composting facility. The hospital also donates produce to a food bank and sends old grease to a
rendering facility. Its food discard recovery program allows Fletcher Allen to save approximately
$1,400 per year in landfill hauling and tipping fees and to support a local farm.

Norfolk General Hospital / Norfolk Hospital Nursing Home (Simcoe, Ontario)
Waste Minimization Program Development
Joanne Kiefer, RD C.A.H. Director Nutrition & Foodservices/Housekeeping Norfolk General
Hospital
The food-composting program was implemented in October 1994. The food waste from the
Nutrition and Foodservices Departments’ kitchen, as well as food waste returned on patient trays,
is fed into a garburator along with paper napkins, paper towels, milk cartons, and cardboard. The
waste is shredded and emptied into 64-gallon tubs. The waste is then taken to a plant and
recycled into high-protein feed supplement for animals.

Addition of Composting Can in Cafeteria
Hanover and District Hospital
May 2009, dietary staff placed a new composting receptacle in the hospital cafeteria.
This has resulted in approximately 10 more gallons of compostable materials being collected and
diverted from our general garbage every week! The compost material will be used in the
hospital's flower beds.

POLLUTION PREVENTION WORKS FOR IOWA: HEALTH CARE CASE
SUMMARIES
Julie A. Nelson, Larry A. Gibson, WRAP Sr. Team, Iowa Department of Natural Resources
The following case summaries represent some of the exemplary projects health care facilities are
doing (1996) to prevent pollution and save money. Together they document an annual savings of
at least $261,000 and one time capital savings of at least $700,000 in addition to the following
benefits: significant reductions in solid waste to landfill and hazardous wastes to
treatment/disposal ; reductions in the use of toxic and hazardous materials ; improved efficiency
in resource utilization and facility maintenance ; enhanced employee involvement and patient
feedback.

A Hospital Case Study
Minnesota Office of Waste Management
The project demonstrates that source reduction is a viable waste management method for
hospitals. Measurement of cost changes and waste prevented took place on a product-by-product
basis. The hospitals goal was simple: Reduce the amount of solid waste generated by the facility.
