Winnipeg Vibrant Communities Symposium
Centre de collaboration nationale sur les politiques publiques et la santé (CCNPPS)
Le Vibrant communities Symposium et pré-symposium ont eu lieu à Winnipeg, au Manitoba, du
9 au 11 mars 2010. L'objectif de cet évènement était d'échanger sur les caractéristiques sociales,
économiques, environnementales et culturelles d'une « Vibrant Community » afin de développer
une charte et bâtir une vision commune pour le futur.
La journée pré-symposium avait pour thème L'évaluation d'impact sur la santé (ÉIS) : un outil
pour promouvoir les politiques publiques favorables à la santé.

It is a major task for hospital epidemiologists to maintain high standards of hygiene while
reducing environmental pollution, reducing consumption of limited natural resources, and
minimizing costs. The reduction of hospital waste, the control of polluting and toxic emissions,
the avoidance of unnecessary disinfection procedures and disposables, and the implementation of
energy and water saving technologies are practicable measures in hospital ecology. To realize a
sustainable development within hospitals, it is necessary that the need to maintain a balance
between effective infection control and a good ecological environment is recognized and
supported by health-care workers and the hospital management.

mène campagne à travers les huit États américains et les deux provinces canadiennes longeant ce
bassin pour bannir les rejets de produits pharmaceutiques dans l'eau. «Il y a deux problèmes
majeurs avec les médicaments», déplore le directeur de l'organisation, David Ullrich. «Ils sont
prescrits trop fréquemment et il n'y a pas de système efficace pour les récupérer.»

Japan Turns to Adult Diapers for Fuel

Enter Japanese company Super Faiths who has created their SFD Recycle System machine that
automatically shreds, dries and sterilizes dirty diapers from hospitals and nursing homes, and
turns them into fuel pellets. These bacteria-free pellets can then be used in biomass boilers and
stoves for home or water heating.
A hospital in Tokyo has two machines that process a total of 1,400 pounds of disposable diapers
a day. It takes a day for the diapers to become fuel material.

Clinical educators are sought for world-leading, ground-breaking sustainable healthcare pilot
teaching in 2010-11! "Sustainable Healthcare Education Teams" in each medical school in Great
Britain will include a clinical educator, a public health educator and a medical student
representative. They are looking for supportive clinicians, who are willing to explore
sustainability issues with students in a clinical context.
